BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University Women's Lacrosse team held off a late run by MIT Saturday afternoon, coming away with a 12-11 non-conference win over the Engineers.
Eva Then (Yarmouth, Maine) put the Engineers on the board first with a goal two minutes into the game. Roger Williams would then rattle off three straight scores—two by
Emily Stoeppel (Brookline, Conn.) and one by
Lauren Flahive (Attleboro, Mass.)—to gain the lead with 14 minutes left in the half.
MIT would answer with four straight goals in a two-minute stretch regain the lead, going up 5-3.
Ashley Warren (Wilmington, Mass.) brought Roger Williams back within one with a tally with 7:43 left in the period. Then in the final minute,
Shayne Rivard (Easton, Conn.) tied the game with 32 seconds, followed by a go-ahead score from Stoeppel with three seconds left to send RWU into halftime up 6-5.
The scoring rally for the Hawks would continue into the second half, as they put together four unanswered goals in the first ten minutes of play for a 10-5 lead. The Engineers would not be deterred, coming back with four straight scores of their own, with Cecilia McCormick (Islip, N.Y.) putting in the final goal of the run to make it an 8-10 game with 12:58 left.
Rivard and Then would trade goals for both teams to keep RWU's lead at two. The Hawks managed to get a key free-position goal with 5:05 left. A foul by the Engineers' keeper gave Warren an open look on net, which she converted to give RWU a three-goal lead.
That score would make the difference, as Then and Katie Pelton (Wayne, Pa.) both scored to bring the Engineers within one with three minutes left to play. Later with 2:33 left,
Hannah Goodwin (Bradford, Mass.) made a crucial save on a free-position attempt to maintain RWU's advantage. The Hawks would then take an intentional shot-clock violation to give MIT possession with only five seconds left. The Engineers could get the ball out of their defensive end as RWU held on for the win.
Stoeppel (3 G, 1 A) and Warren (2 G, 2 A) both finished with four points, while Flahive added two goals, seven draw controls and two caused turnovers. Goodwin finished with ten saves in the win.
Ana Flooks (Weston, Conn.) led the Engineers with five points (2 G, 3 A) while Then scored four goals for MIT. Christine Padalino (Potomac, Md.) had four ground balls and a game-high four caused turnovers. Hannah Adams (McLean, Va.).
Roger Williams (2-0) begins their West Coast Spring Break trip Tuesday with a 7:00 PM PST match against Redlands. MIT (1-1) will host Endicott on Monday.
