SPRINGFIELD, Mass.—The Roger Williams Baseball team lost two to Western New England today 4-14 and 9-13.
In game one,
Michael Farrell (Bellingham, Mass.) was on the mound for the Hawks. The Golden Bears came out firing scoring eight runs in the bottom of the first inning.
From there, the Hawks tried to come back in the top of the third when
Justin Stone (Blackstone, Mass.) singled down the left field line moving
Joey Gulino (Meriden, Conn.) to third. Up next was
Chris Bosco (North Andover, Mass.) who tripled to center field scoring Gulino and Stone for an 8-2 score.
In the bottom of the fourth, WNE earned another run from Aaron Rios's (Stratford, Conn.) sacrifice fly turning the scoreboard to 9-2.
Stone then hit a two run homer to left field bringing the score to 9-4 in the top of the fifth.
The Golden Bears tacked on one more in the same inning from Alex Loparco's (Riverside, Conn.) RBI double down the left field line.
WNE continued to produce offensively earning four more runs in the bottom of the seventh for a final score of 4-14.
Stone went three for four while Elijiah Camner (Hamden, Conn.),
Anthony Dominguez (Chester, N.J.), and
Ben Bonavita (East Longmeadow, Mass.) all chipped in for a hit as well.
In game two,
Justin Garcia (Foxborough, Mass.) toed the rubber earning four strikeouts for the Hawks.
In the top of the second,
Danny Roth (West Hartford, Conn.) led off with a single to center field. Dominguez laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Roth over. Shortly after, Roth stole third and Bonavita walked to bring up
Tommy Hobin (Madison, Conn.). Hobin flied out to center field but scored Roth in the process earning a 1-0 lead.
The bottom of the third was successful for the Golden Bears as they earned five runs from two doubles and two singles to put them up 5-1.
WNE scored another three runs in the bottom of the fourth to build the score 8-1.
The Hawks weren't done yet as they continued to fight in the top of the sixth earning six runs. With one out, Dominguez singled to right field. Bonavita was hit by a pitch causing Hobin to come up and rip a single to right field advancing both runners one base. Gulino then ended up walking with the bases loaded for the first run of the inning followed by a wild pitch that scored another run. Bosco was due up next and roped a double to right field scoring Gulino and Hobin for an 8-5 score. After Camner walked, Roth hit a 2 RBI single to right field putting the Hawks within one at 8-7.
In the top of the seventh, Stone singled to center field causing
Tyler Brett (Hebron, Conn.) to score to tie the game 8-8.
However, the Golden Bears answered in the bottom of the seventh by scoring five runs putting them at 13.
The Hawks could only score one more run for the rest of the game from Roth's solo homerun leaving the score at 13-9.
RWU (10-16-1) is scheduled to play a single game against Wesleyan University (11-12) on Tuesday April 16
th at 4:00 p.m.
