Baseball Gets the Win Against JWU

PROVIDENCE, R.I.—The Roger Williams Baseball team won 8-4 to Johnson & Wales University in a single game on a Wednesday afternoon.

Michael Farrell (Bellingham, Mass.) recorded the win earning two strikeouts and only allowing five hits, one run, and one walk.

JWU scored first due to an RBI single from Adam Diehl (Cypress, Texas) to put the Wildcats up 1-0 in the bottom of the first.

However, the Hawks had a strong inning to follow earning five runs in the top of the second. Danny Roth (West Hartford, Conn.) led the team off with a single through the left side. A walk and an error helped score Roth, which then brought up Ben Bonavita (East Longmeadow, Mass.) who singled through the right side plating two. Brandon Jenkins (East Bridgewater, Mass.) was due up next and hit a triple to right field scoring Bonavita. In the same inning, Joey Gulino (Meriden, Conn.) reached first on an error by the shortstop causing one more run to come in for a 5-1 lead.

Another RBI single was hit for JWU to add another run to the score in the bottom of the third.

In the bottom of the fourth, Colby Greenhalgh (Plainfield, Conn.) hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score teammate Steve Rocchio (Cranston, R.I.) to put the score at 5-3.

With two outs in the top of the sixth, Gulino doubled to left field with Justin Stone (Blackstone, Mass.) up next who hit a single through the left side to tack on another run.

The Hawks could not stop offensively as they earned two more runs in the top of the seventh from Bonavita's 2 RBI single that put them up 8-3.

The bottom of the seventh was the only time that the Wildcats could earn another run but could not get enough to defeat the Hawks.

Eli Camner (Hamden, Conn.) chipped in with two hits and Tommy Hobin (Madison, Conn.) contributed one to give RWU the 8-4 win.

The Hawks (12-16-1) play again tomorrow at Keene State College (8-16) in a single game at 3:30 p.m.
