BIDDEFORD, Maine — The Roger Williams University Softball team suffered a pair of setbacks to the University of New England Saturday afternoon, falling 0-8 in the opener and 2-6 in the second game.
UNE put five runs on the board in the bottom of the second in the first game. Caroline Schoenbucher (Barrington, N.H.) had the key hit in the frame, a two-out, two-RBI triple to cap off the scoring for the Nor'Easters. They would add another one in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Taylor Depot (Auburn, Maine) while Anna Sessa (Tewksbury, Mass.) used a two-RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to end the game in the Nor'Easters favor.
The Hawk offense struggled in the contest, as they were held to only two hits in the game.
Micaela Pohl (Middleboro, Mass.) and
Amanda Boulter (Wakefield, Mass.) both finished 1-for-2 in the game for RWU.
Lia Nocella (Tyngsboro, Mass.) suffered the loss, allowing eight runs in 4.0 innings with a pair of strikeouts.
In the second game, the Nor'Easters took advantage of RWU miscues throughout the game. Zelie Condon-Layman (South Burlington, Vt.) scored in the bottom of the third on a throwing error while another Hawk error led to another run in the bottom of the fourth.
The Hawks were able to get their first run of the day in the top of the fifth.
Sydney Provencal (Cumberland, R.I.) used an infield RBI single to bring home
Taylor Chatowsky (North Kingstown, R.I.).
UNE got one of the runs back in the bottom of the fifth on a fielder's choice by Zea Macris (Barre, Vt.). The Nor'Easters would add three more in the bottom of the sixth on a wild pitch and a two-RBI single by Macris.
In the top of the seventh, RWU managed to get the first three batters on base in
Rachel Wandzilak (West Islip, N.Y.),
Katrina Goria (Wyckoff, N.J.), and
Audrey Gavin (Old Lyme, Conn.). An RBI groundout by Hailey Pretchel (Glenmont, N.Y.) scored Wandzilak to put runners at second and third. Unfortunately for RWU, a pop-out to short and a strikeout ended the rally.
Provencal and Goria both finished 2-for-3 with Provencal adding an RBI.
Alexandra Lombardo (Thomaston, Conn.) drew three walks in four at-bats.
Alyssa Murray (Green Brook, N.J.) took the loss, giving up six runs (three earned) in 5.0 innings.
Roger Williams (16-20, 6-8 CCC) will conclude the regular season Sunday at home against Nichols. UNE (23-14, 12-4 CCC) will begin play in the Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament Friday.
