BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University Baseball Team was defeated by Babson College this Wednesday afternoon, 11-9.
In the top of the first inning, Sean Harrington (Walpole, Mass.) flew out to left field in a sacrifice fly to bring Thomas Lapham (Charlestown, Mass.) home to put the Beavers on the board. The Hawks came back in the bottom of the inning with a home run by
Danny Roth (West Hartford, Conn.) to run both him and
Eli Camner (Hamden, Conn.) home.
Nicholas Browne (Mount Laurel, N.J.) followed with a home run for Babson to advance him, Matthew Valente (Wyckoff, N.J.) and Eric Jaun (Loveland, Ohio) home to take the lead at 4-2. The Hawks tied the game in the bottom of the inning with an RBI from both
Tommy Hobin (Madison, Conn.) and
Joey Gulino (Meriden, Conn.) to bring
Tyler Cedeno (Maynard, Mass.) and
George Somers (Lake Hopatcong, N.J.) home unearned.
In the third inning, RWU was the only team to reach home with Cedeno reaching first on an error by the pitcher to advance Roth home to give them the lead. In the fourth inning, neither team got a run followed with three straight outs in the top of the fifth inning by
Anthony Sapienza (North Andover, Mass.).
The Beavers found home again in the top of the sixth inning with a double RBI by Valente to bring Jake Oliger (Newtown, Conn.) home to take the lead. Babson did not stop here with Valente reaching home on a passed ball and Browne scoring on a wild pitch to bring the score to 8-5. Ben Aleixo (North Smithfield, R.I.) then struck out all three Hawks in the bottom of the inning.
In the top of the seventh inning, Valente stayed on fire with a single up the middle to bring Oliger home followed with a single from Brian McHale (Ramsey, N.J.) to bring Valente home. The Hawks cut the Beavers lead in the bottom of the inning with a single from Cedeno to advance Roth home to bring the score to 10-6.
Brandon Jenkins (East Bridgewater, Mass.) finished the inning with an RBI for
Justin Stone (Blackstone, Mass.) to reach home.
The Beavers were struck out three times in a row by Demers in the top of the eighth inning. With an RBI from Stone, Camner scored unearned in the bottom of the inning. Cedeno then reached first on an error by the second baseman to advance Roth home unearned to cut Babson's lead to one at 10-9.
Mchale singled to right side in the top of the ninth to bring Valente home for the Beavers for their final run of the game. The Hawks could not find home in the bottom of the inning and Babson took the win 11-9.
Roth led the Hawks with four runs and two RBIs. Bosco contributed with nine put outs. Sapienza took the loss with six strikeouts and eight runs allowed.
Valente led the Beavers with four runs and three RBIs. Alex Reynolds (Hopkinton, Mass.) contributed with eight put outs Andrew Garbarini (Lake Worth, Fla.) took the win with one strikeout and two runs allowed.
Roger Williams (6-11-1, CCC 2-2-1) will head to Salve Regina Friday. Babson (16-2, CCC 7-0) will head to Wheaton College Friday.
