Softball Defeats Johnson & Wales by Three

PROVIDENCE, R.I.—The Roger Williams Softball team defeated the Johnson & Wales Wildcats 8-5 in a single game on a Wednesday afternoon.

In the top of the third, Hailey Prechtel (Glenmont, N.Y.) got things started by singling to right field. Speedy Audrey Gavin (Old Lyme, Conn.) pinch ran for Prechtel and immediately stole second base.

Elizabeth Lombardo (Thomaston, Conn.) roped a double to right field bringing in the first run of the game. Alexis Romano (Shirley, N.Y.) stepped up and hit a ball through the left side and quickly stole second base with a first and third situation at hand. A wild pitch by Summer Ramundo (Lincoln Park, NJ) scored E. Lombardo for a 2-0 lead for the Hawks.

JWU started to come back by earning a run in the bottom of the fourth to put them within one (2-1).

It was the top of the fifth that the Hawks came to play offensively. Romano and Micaela Pohl (Middleboro, Mass.) both singled to put runners on first and second. Tara Chatowsky (North Kingstown, R.I.) walked to load the bases when Alex Lombardo (Thomaston, Conn.) singled down the right field line to bring in one. Amanda Boulter (Wakefield, Mass.) was due up next and drove the ball to left field earning a 2 RBI double. Prechtel stepped in the batter's box and hit her second single of the game that also drove in two runs putting the score at 7-1.

The Wildcats still kept chipping away in the bottom of the sixth scoring two more runs from a double and a couple of errors in the field (7-3).

Tr. Chatowsky's single up the middle plated teammate Sydney Provencal (Cumberland, R.I.) who got on earlier by a fielder's choice to add the Hawks final run of the game.

In the bottom of the seventh, JWU started the inning off with a homerun from Kristin Frost (Pearl City, Hi.) leading them believe that they still had a shot to come back. A couple of singles led to another run for the Wildcats but that is where it ended as the Hawks took the win 8-5.

Prechtel took the win only allowing three runs, six hits, one walk, and earning three strikeouts.

The Hawks will face conference member Wentworth Institute of Technology on Saturday April 6th at 12:00 and 2:00 p.m.
