BRISTOL, R.I.—The Roger Williams Women's Tennis team lost to Division I Holy Cross 1-8 on a Thursday afternoon.
RWU's number one's of doubles
Heidi Martin (Scituate, Mass.) /
Riley Spillane (Easton, Mass.) came out strong against opponents Katya Martin (Highland, Utah) / Allison Reiling () with an 8-6 upset.
No. 2's
Libby Bennett (Watertown, Conn.) and
Tanya Gianitsos (Old Saybrook, Conn.) lost 8-1 and No. 3's
Alexa DiCesare (Norwood, Mass.) and
Shannon DeChiara (Chelmsford, Mass.) were defeated 8-3.
In singles play, Martin and Bennett went into a tie breaker match with opponents Reiling and Morgan McGuire (Franklin Lakes, N.J.). They both resulted in losses but not without a fight. Martin's final score was 1-6, 6-3, 10-3 and Bennett's was 6-7, 7-6, 7-10.
Spillane's single matchup resulted in a 0-6, 0-6 loss, Gianitsos's results were recorded as 2-6, 0-2, DiCesare lost 3-6, 0-6, and DeChiara was defeated 3-6, 0-6.
Coach
Barry Gorman was very impressed with the number one doubles performance and was happy everyone got the chance to play against a very good Division I team.
The Hawks have one more match of the season on Friday April 12
th against Regis College at 4:00 p.m.
