MEDFORD, Mass.—On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, the Roger Williams Baseball team defeated Tufts University 8-5.
In the top of the second,
Ben Bonavita (East Longmeadow, Mass.) hit a two run homer to right field that put the Hawks ahead 2-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Jumbos scored two from Eric Schnepf's (Bridgewater, N.J.) double and then another from Will Shackelford's (Orleans, Mass.) double to take the lead. With one out, Justin Mills (Highland Park, Ill.) then hit a two run homerun to
put the scoreboard at 5-2.
However, in the top of the sixth, the Hawks made a comeback when junior
Justin Stone (Blackstone, Mass.) hit a grand slam making it a 6-5 ball game.
With two outs in the eighth, Stone singled to left center. Due up was
Chris Bosco (North Andover, Mass.) who hit the ball to left field.
In the process, the left fielder mishandled the ball causing Stone to score and Bosco to advance to third to increase the lead 7-5.
In the top of the ninth with two outs and the bases loaded, Jumbo's pitcher Steven Landry (Bethesda, Md.) threw a wild pitch to score
Eddy Jackson (Seekonk, Mass.).
Tufts had a chance to come back in the bottom of the ninth with the bases loaded but
Chris Flynn (Naugatuck, Conn.) came into pitch for the Hawks and saved the 8-5 game.
Stone went 3 for 4 on the day while Bonavita went 2 for 3 both hitting homeruns for RWU.
Anthony Sapienza (North Andover, Mass.) picked up the win allowing six hits, five runs, three walks, and earning five strikeouts.
The Hawks (9-13-1) play again tomorrow against UMass.-Boston (12-8) in a single game at 3:30 p.m.
