BEVERLY, Mass. – The second-seeded Roger Williams University Women's Lacrosse team was denied its second Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship in team history as top-seeded Endicott College took the title with an 11-10 overtime Friday evening in the CCC Championship Game.
Delana Erickson (Concord, N.H.) notched the first goal of the game for Roger Williams at the 28:21 mark. A foul by the Gulls with five seconds left on the shot clock led to a free position attempt for
Lauren Flahive (Foxborough, Mass.). Flahive would toss a pass to her left on the whistle and Erickson converted the shot.
The Gulls got the goal back two minutes later when Aleah McKay (Bedford, N.H.) found Meghan Dutchyshyn (Cheshire, Conn.) behind the Hawk defense for her 35
th goal of the season. However, RWU would regain the lead at 25:04.
Lydia Nelson (Center Moriches, N.Y.) made a low save off a free-position shot by Ali Campbell (Lakeville, Mass.), leading to a Hawk offensive possession. On the other end of the field,
Devon Sarazin (Falmouth, Maine) found
Emily Stoeppel (Brookfield, Conn.) in the middle of the arc for the goal. Then RWU would win the ensuing draw, leading to a goal by
Ashley Warren (Wilmington, Mass.) for a 3-1 Hawk lead and a Gull timeout.
After the break, Warren would score again late in the shot clock at 22:49 to build RWU's lead to three. On the next draw, a yellow card on the Hawks led to player-up opportunity for the Gulls. Jackie Healy (Northborough, Mass.) would make it a successful attempt, converting a goal off a MacKay assist to make it 4-2.
A goal by Nicole Anselmo (Natick, Mass.) at 15:58 brought Endicott within one, while Dutchyshyn tied the game at four with her second tally of the game with 13:59 left in the half. The Gulls would take its first lead of the day at the 10:24 mark with a free-position goal by MacKay to make it 5-4, leading to an RWU timeout.
With nine minutes left, the Hawks forced consecutive turnovers on the Gulls to get three offensive opportunities. Unfortunately for RWU, Endicott's Bella Rino (Northborough, Mass.) stopped all three shots on net by RWU to maintain the Gull lead. The Hawks were finally able to knot the game with 2:15 left when Stoeppel put in a pass from Warren off of a free-position attempt.
In the closing seconds of the half, Endicott forced a turnover and was able to get down the field and get two shots, but Nelson turned the first way while the second rolled wide right. Both teams went into the break tied at five.
RWU won the opening second half draw, but Julia Lanteri (Glastonbury, Conn.) forced a turnover and brought the ball down the field the other way. She found Healy open in front of the net, but a heads-up save by Nelson denied Endicott's chance to regain the lead. On the other end, a foul by the Gulls gave Erickson a free-position opportunity that she put in to put RWU back up 6-5 at 28:50.
RWU's lead only lasted for 42 seconds, as Endicott won the following draw, leading to a goal by Maya Feigenbaum (West Hartford, Conn.) to tie it at six apiece.
At the 25:13 mark,
Maeve Gillis (Duxbury, Mass.) put up a shot that was saved by RIno and rolled towards the end line. Flahive was able to corral the loose ball, sprint back towards the goal and put in a shot in the top shelf to put the Hawks back up 7-6.
The game would be scoreless over the next 13 minutes as strong defense by both teams and timely saves by Nelson and Rino kept the game in RWU's favor. Endicott would end the scoring drought at the 12:03 mark, when a Hawk foul gave MacKay a free-position attempt. She took the ball in and fired in a shot to the upper left corner to knot the game at seven.
With 12:23 left, Endicott appeared to get RWU to turn it over, forcing
Madi Drain (Waterboro, Maine) out of bounds. Instead the Gulls were given a yellow card, leading to a player-up opportunity. A minute later, the Hawks had a free position attempt, in which Sarazin passed it to a cutting Flahive for the go-ahead goal. Then with 7:35 left and one second on the shot clock, Sarazin put in a free-position shot past Rino to give the Hawks a crucial two-goal lead.
It would prove to be a clutch goal, as Feigenbaum found Allie Lawlor (York, Maine) with 6:15 left to bring the Gulls back within one. Then a minute later, Lantieri made it a 9-9 game with a free-position goal of her own.
With 3:48 left to play, Stoeppel logged a goal to put RWU back on top by one, but Feigenbaum tied things back up a minute later. Then with 1:21 left, Feigenbaum appeared to score the go-ahead tally, but it was taken off the board due to an illegal stick, keeping the game tied at ten. In the final minute, both Nelson and Rino made crucial stops to keep the game tied at ten going into overtime.
In the extra period, Nelson turned away shots by Endicott in the first two minutes of play. Then in the final minute of the first three-minute period with RWU holding possession, a controversial injury stoppage time for Endicott negated a scoring opportunity for RWU to convert, as the game stayed knotted. After the sides were switched, RWU won the draw but EC was able to force a turnover to gain possession. Then with 1:17 left, Healy logged the winning goal to give Endicott the title.
Sarazin finished with four points on two goals and two assists, while Stoeppel added three goals. Warren and Flahive each added two goals and one assist. Stoeppel added three draw controls and two caued turnovers. Nelson finished with 15 saves on the night for RWU.
MacKay had five points on two goals and three assists, with Feigenbaum, Healy, and Dutchyshyn all scoring twice. Rino had 11 saves for EC.
Roger Williams ends the season at 13-6 overall.
