WALTHAM, Mass.—The Roger Williams Baseball team defeated Bates College 9-4 on a Wednesday afternoon in an added game of their regular season.
Bates scored in the first inning when Bryan Gotti (Westwood, Mass) hit a sacrifice fly to score teammate Jack Arend (Newfields, N.H.) for a 1-0 score.
The Hawks answered right away in the same inning when
Ben Bonavita (East Longmeadow, Mass.) hit a two run homer to put them ahead by one.
In the second,
Tyler Brett (Hebron, Conn.) hit an RBI single to center field to bring in another run for a 3-1 lead.
RWU's
Chris Bosco (North Andover, Mass.) singled to left field to start off the bottom of the third inning. After stealing both second and third, he scored when Bates catcher threw down to second to try and get runner
Danny Roth (West Hartford, Conn.) out on the steal.
Brandon Jenkins (East Bridgewater, Mass.) came up with an RBI as he grounded out to second base and
Eddy Jackson (Seekonk, Mass.) hit a single to center field to plate
Joey Gulino (Meriden, Conn.) to put them up 6-1.
In the sixth, the Hawks struck again with an RBI single from
Tyler Cedeno (Maynard, Mass.) and one from Bosco as well to add two to the scoreboard.
Roth then homered in the seventh to give the Hawks a steady 9-1 lead.
Bates finally scored again in the eighth from two RBI singles to bring the score to 9-3.
The Bobcats added one in the last inning when Christian Beal (Flossmoor, Ill.) singled to right field bringing in a run. However, Bosco who moved to right field, hit his cut who then threw Antonio Jareno (Marietta, Ga.) out at home for the second out of the inning. Bates did not score again and the Hawks took the win 9-4.
Cedeno, Bosco, Bonavita, Gulino,
George Somers (Lake Hopatcong, N.J.), and Brett all went 2 for 4 on the day.
Craig Demers (Acushnet, Mass.) recorded the win earning one strikeout and only allowing one walk.
RWU (20-17-1) will play Salve Regina University (25-15) in the CCC Championship at home starting on Friday at 3:00 p.m.
