Women's Tennis Sweeps Simmons in Home Opener

BRISTOL, R.I.—The Roger Williams Women's Tennis team swept Simmons University 9-0 in their home opener on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks won all three doubles and finished strong defeating the last six opponents as well.

Hawk Highlights
  • Freshmen Alessia Cahoon (Dedham, Mass.) and Emma Place (Francestown, N.H.) won their first doubles and singles as a Hawk.
  • Cahoon and Heidi Martin (Scituate, Mass.) were down 7-4 in doubles but came back to win 8-7.
  • Riley Spillane (Easton, Mass.) swept Mary Miller (Newton, N.H.) 6-0, 6-0 during singles play.
For the Opponents
  • Marissa Johnson (Norwell, Mass.) put up a fight against Martin during singles with a score of 2-6, 6-7.
  •  Johnson and Nickie Nguyen (Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam) came within one to Cahoon and Martin during doubles at 7-8.
How It Happened
Starting with doubles, the Hawks took an early 3-0 lead including RWU's newest members Cahoon and Place. With these freshmen in the line-up, the Hawks started their season off with a win putting them at 1-0 for their next matchup. Jessica Magliato (New Rochelle, N.Y) and Morgan Crimmins (Boston, Mass.) also defeated their opponents 6-1, 6-1 and 6-3 during singles play. Libby Bennett (Watertown, Conn.) also contributed to the team's victory by winning her doubles with partner Spillane.

What's Next
The Hawks match up against Worcester State at home September 3rd at 4:00 p.m. and the Sharks travel back home to play Gordon on September 2nd at 12:00 p.m.
