Field Hockey Outlasted By Wesleyan

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Field Hockey team was nipped 1-0 by Wesleyan University in a defensive battle on a rainy Thursday evening.

Sydney McCarthy (Little Falls, N.Y.): 1 shot, 1 shot on goal
Callie Flanagan (Wenham, Mass.): 10 saves, 1 goal allowed, 60:00 minutes in goal

Diana Schwarz (Etna, N.H.): 5 shots, 4 shots on goal
Caitlin Grant (North Easton, Mass.): 0 goals allowed, 4 saves, 60:00 minutes in goal

How It Happened
Both teams braved the elements throughout most of the game, as a hard downpour fell from the sky throughout most of the first half. The rain began to let up in the second half, but wet conditions remained.

The rain favored both teams' defenses, as neither side was able to score over the first three periods of the game. Roger Williams's offense stalled over the first three quarters, as Wesleyan outshot RWU 14-2 over the time frame.

Wesleyan came close to putting on the board with Olivia Baglierei (Englewood, Colo.) serving up a high shot on goal. However a glove save by Callie Flanagan denied her the opportunity.

The Cardinals managed to get on the board less than a minute into the fourth quarter, as Myla Stovall put one past the keeper for a 1-0 Wesleyan lead. RWU's best chance to tie the game came with just under ten minutes left, as Sydney McCarthy, Alex Coppinger (Guilderland, N.Y.), and Lauren Deering (Norwalk, Conn.) put back-to-back-to-back shots on goal. Yet Caitlin Grant was able to stop all three to keep RWU off the board. The Hawks would be held to only one more shot the rest of the way as Wesleyan held on for the win.
