Women’s Cross Country Announces DePalma And Mitchell As Team Captains

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams Women's Cross Country team named Grace DePalma (Oak Ridge, N.J.) and Siobhan Mitchell (West Newbury, Mass.) to be team captains for the fall of 2020.

A first-time captain, DePalma earned a spot on the All-Commonwealth Coast Conference team last season with a fourth-place finish at the CCC Championship. Her 6K time was 23:51.18, not only a personal best, but also ranks seventh in program history. She set a career-best 5K time last season with a time of 19:32.25 at the Westfield State Invitational. That time earned her a 23rd place finish and ranks ninth in program history in the 5K.

"Grace persevered through her first two seasons of running cross country, showing flashes of breaking through both in her times and competing for a spot in the top seven," said Head Coach Sean Livingston. "All that changed last fall. After putting in a fantastic summer of training—both physically and mentally—she showed right away in pre-season she was going to be among the team's front runners. I know Grace will do a great job leading the team, both by the example she sets and the enthusiasm and energy she brings to each practice."

Mitchell is also a captain for the first time. She made the All-CCC team last year with a 12th place finish at the CCC Championship. Her time of 23:47.41 was a personal best and ranks her 10th in program history in the 6K. Her 19:31.79 time at the James Earley Invitational earned her a 22nd place finish. It was her career best and also got her in the record books as the eighth-best 5K time in program history. She also a recorded a third place finish at the Fens Classic by Emmanuel College with a 12:53 two-mile time.

"Siobhan has been such a pleasure to coach over her four years, in both cross country and track," Livingston said. "She's a great example of an athlete coming to practice each and every day and simply putting in all the hard work it takes in order to get better. She is as humble an athlete as you'll ever meet and it's been incredibly gratifying for me as a coach to see what's she's been able to accomplish since her freshman year."

"Through her work ethic and consistency of training, she has worked her way up through the ranks of the team and now is one of our top runners," Livingston said. "I know the team very much looks up to Siobhan and have been inspired by her determination, her dedication, and her work ethic. Despite the challenges of what the fall season will look like, Siobhan will be someone I know will help get the best out of everyone."
