Depth Makes The Difference In Women’s Tennis Win Over Gordon

WENHAM, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Women's Tennis team claimed their sixth-straight victory, holding off Gordon College, 7-2, at the Brigham Athletic Complex on Wednesday night. The Hawks grabbed the victory despite coming out on the losing end in the top flight of both singles and doubles play, RWU won every other matchup in the contest.
 
With the win the Hawks finish the regular season with a record of 11-1, including 6-1 against Commonwealth Coast Conference competition. The Fighting Scots on the other hand fall to 4-3, 3-3 against CCC foes.
 
Hawk Highlights
In doubles play, Gordon took the top matchup as Emma Place (Francestown, N.H.) and Alessia Cahoon (Dedham, Mass.) fell for the first time this season to Annette Kim (Andover, Mass.) and Jordyn Maddex (Andover, Kan.), 6-8. Roger Williams blanked the Fighting Scots in the other two matches, however. In the second flight, Gianna Ferraro (Westerly, R.I.) and Olivia Santoro (Cheshire, Conn.) beat Madison West (Southampton, N.Y.) and Kristin Kendall (Cumberland, Maine), 8-0. Then in #3 doubles, Gracie McCarthy (Marion, Mass.) and Kate Hardy (Southington, Conn.) defeated Abbigail Fournier (Biddeford, Maine) and Meli Markarian (Sutton, Mass.).
 
In singles, Place went the distance but faltered against Maddex, 3-6, 6-3, 0-6. The rest of the lineup was terrific for the Hawks beginning with Cahoon who held off Kim, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in singles #2. In the third flight, Ferraro beat West, 7-6, 6-4. Alexa DiCesare (Norwood, Mass.) dominated Kendall, 8-1 in the fourth flight. In singles #5, McCarthy beat Fournier, 6-3, 6-1. Finally, Santoro blanked Markarian, 6-0, 6-0 in singles #6.
