How It Happened
The Hawks kept the offensive pressure on the Valiants in the first quarter, outshooting Manhattanville 5-0 in the period. The Hawks also got extra help with Manhattanville only able to play nine field players. Despite the advantage, Manhattanville managed to play strong defense and keep RWU off the board in the period. The Hawks' best opportunity to score came halfway through the quarter, when Hannah Gaffney (Bolton, Mass.) stepped up to take a penalty stroke. Her shot just missed the mark to the right, keeping the scoreboard blank.

Manhattanville continued to play solid defense against the Hawks in the second quarter, holding RWU to only two shots in the period. The Valiants stacked the box with all nine players to limit the Hawks' opportunities. Though Manhattanville got into their offense set once, they weren't able to get any shots off. The game remained tied entering halftime.

In the third quarter, the Hawk offense got more aggressive, logging three penalty corners and two shots in the first five minutes of play. In total, Roger Williams put up four shots and four penalty corners in the period. Amelia Monahan (Bristol, N.H.) had a chance halfway to get RWU on the board but was turned away thanks to a defensive save by Alyssa Monahan (East Fishkill, N.Y.).

The final quarter saw Manhattanville get its first shot of the game up, and nearly made it count. Felicity Williams (Glenn Falls, N.Y.) put up a chest-high shot from the front part of the box but was denied by RWU's Callie Flanagan (Wenham, Mass.).

With 7:47 on the clock, Roger Williams appeared to have tallied the first goal of the game, when Kelly Doherty (Mansfield, Mass.) knocked in a loose ball off of shot by Monahan. However the referees conferred and disallowed the goal due to a high stick. That would prove to be crucial as the Hawks weren't able to get an

Morgan Foley (Hanover, Mass.) had a breakaway with three minutes to play in OT but was broken up by Monahan, leading to the final extra period. In double OT, Waryas put in the game winner with just under three minutes left, shooting in a loose ball that was kicked away by Valiant keeper Cat Morgan (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.).
