How It Happened
Roger Williams got on the board early on in the seventh minute. The Hawks received a corner kick that
Sarina Olson (Bristol, R.I.) handled sending a high arching kick into scrum in front of the goal. The ball remained in the box as Gordon was unable to control or clear it and eventually it found its' way to
Jordin Comstock (East Granby, Conn.). She got it at the six-yard box straight away and with her left foot, rocketed a shot into the upper right 90 for her second goal in the past three games.
The Fighting Scots evened the score in the 26
th minute thanks to Calla Ashley (Lancaster, Pa.). After the ball was mishandled by a Hawks defender in in the defensive zone, Ashley was able to gather the loose ball and get a free run at the net on the right side of the pitch. She took a shot from around the top-left intersection of 18-yard box and sent it into the upper left 90 for the score. It was her team-leading ninth goal of the season.
In the first half of play, the hosts only allowed RWU to take one shot, though it was a goal, while they took eight shots with four of them on frame. Each team also got one corner kick each.
Gordon grabbed the advantage in the 65
th minute of action. Off of a throw in, Abbey Engle (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) settled the ball and threaded a short through pass to a cutting Kendra Wentling (Foxborough, Mass.) in deep. She got to it and from short range chipped a shot into the top left corner of the goal for her third goal of the season.
The Hawks had a couple of chances to get even, first in the 79
th minute as they got a breakaway chance in transition but the shot by Olson was saved on a fine play by Tori Paine (Northbridge, Mass.) diving to her left. Then, later on, as time expired, they got a pretty good look from the right side, but it missed the net wide left.
Overall, Gordon outshot Roger Williams, 14-8 and received more corner kicks, 6-1, though the shots on goal were even with seven each side.
Coach's Corner
This match was a true reflection of who we are. We may not have won the game but we showed up and played like a proper soccer team tonight, we had courage, showed heart, were well organized, disciplined defensively, and were creative going forward.
Perhaps on another night we get the three points. We worked and competed, it was good game to watch, to be a part of, and more importantly we are going to be a better version of ourselves going into the playoffs if we continue to do the right things which we saw in this match.
We can take away lots of positives from the game. It was a true team performance and the result we wanted almost materialized. We started well, we were up for the match and very nearly came home with a conference win. Make no mistake, we wanted to win tonight and are disappointed not to get something out of it. However, we were collectively good in all areas of the pitch. We defended as a unit, we won battles and duels. We connected our passes and we were asking questions up front. Our team shape was excellent with and without the ball.
We definitely took a step forward as a group. You could see we have an identity, that we have a plan, and all the things we have been working on is there for all to see. Sometimes you need some luck and if we continue to play like this, we will get some luck that will change the course of these last few games.
