How It Happened
The early part of the first half was characterized by a lack of scoring opportunities for both sides. RWU's
Matt Bagley (Trumbull, Conn.) and RIC's Larry Garcia (Central Falls, R.I.) had the lone shots in the game for each team in the first 12 minutes of play.
That would change quickly in the 13
th minute when Roger Williams scored in the 13
th minute. Bagley sent a cross to middle to
Justin Horvath (Stratford, Conn.) who had to lifted a shot right at RIC keeper Charlie Tashjian (West Warwick, R.I.). Tashjian punched the ball away but right at a waiting
Javi Beltran (Madrid, Spain) who tapped it into the left corner of the goal for a 1-0 Hawk lead.
Roger Williams would add to the advantage in the 25
th minute. An Anchorman foul led to a free kick for the Hawks. Beltran booted the kick across the box into the left side and found a waiting
Tyler Andrade (S. Glastonbury, Conn.) who headed the shot into the open left corner.
The Hawk defense would do its job the remainder of the half, holding Rhode Island College without a shot over the final 20 minutes of the period. Roger Williams would hold on to its 2-0 lead going into halftime.
In the second half, Roger Williams continued to put offensive pressure on the Anchormen, taking ten shots in the first 20 minutes of the second half. RIC's Tashjian remained busy in net, making six save off of those Hawk shots. He also later had another great save on a shot by
Austin Hilger (Old Saybrook, Conn.). Hilger had an open shot in the middle of the box and almost put one behind Tashjian, but he was able to extend his arm and deflect the shot to deny Hilger's attempt.
Overall, Roger Williams outshot Rhode Island College 15-4 in the second half. Timely saves by Tashjian kept the Hawks off the board, but the two-goal lead would prove to be the difference as RWU took the match-up.
Coach's Corner
This game against Rhode Island College was our first full, 90 minute performance by our team. Our team really came out of the gates well from the opening whistle and never took the foot off the gas throughout the match. It was especially important to get two first half goals to get on the front foot. It was also great to have
Tyler Andrade score his first goal of the season as well as
Hogan Cain get his first collegiate win and his first shut out. We hope to keep the momentum going and get another CCC win this weekend against University of New England.
