Women’s Soccer Drops CCC Championship To Gordon

WENHAM, Mass. – The sixth-seeded Roger Williams University Women's Soccer Team fell to the third-seed, Gordon College, 1-0, in the Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship game on a crisp Saturday night at the Brigham Athletic Complex.

Playing in their 12th conference championship game in program history, and seventh in the Tim-Moody era, the Hawks had trouble breaking through against the top defense in the CCC, managing just nine shots including four on net in the loss.

Gordon, meanwhile, claims their third CCC crown in program history, and first since 1998.

Hawk Highlights
Bianca Robbins: 4 shots, 1 shot on goal
Rachel Oster: 2 shots, 1 shot on goal
Jordin Comstock: 1 shot, 1 shot on goal

Morgan McCutcheon: 7 saves, 1 goal allowed, 90:00 minutes in goal

For The Opponents
Shelby Jones: 1 goal (GW), 3 shots, 2 shots on goal
Allie LaRue: 1 assist
Calla Ashley: 7 shots, 2 shots on goal

Tori Paine: 4 saves, 0 goals allowed, 90:00 minutes in goal

How It Happened
The two teams battled throughout the first half and ended up playing roughly 44 and a half minutes of 0-0 soccer. Each team had chances with Roger Williams having a trio of breakaway opportunities. Bianca Robbins (Johnston, R.I.) had a pair, but one missed wide, and another was saved, while Jordin Comstock (East Granby, Conn.) had one of her own but did not get her shot on net. Gordon also had some chances including a couple of opportunities off free kicks that were saved by Morgan McCutcheon (Danbury, Conn.) and then cleared by the defense.

The Fighting Scots broke through with about 30 seconds remaining in the half. After a takeaway on the RWU defensive half, Allie LaRue (Graham, Wash.) gathered the ball along the left sideline before sending a high crossing pass to the box. There it bounced before finding the head of Shelby Jones (Greenville, N.C.) and she redirected it into the net for her tenth goal of the season.

Gordon had a number of scoring opportunities in the first half of play, and in the end, they outshot the Hawks, 9-3, took more shots on goal, 4-1, and received more corners, 2-1.

Roger Williams had a few golden chances to break through in the 61st minute. First, Robbins got an opening on a run to the net during which the Gordon goalkeeper, Tori Paine (Northbridge, Mass.), was a little too aggressive and found herself out of position. However, in a terrific defensive play, Savannah Metz (New Cumberland, R.I.) was able to get between Robbins and the goal and block the shot.

Following a brief injury delay, the Hawks had another chance as they got a takeaway on their offensive half and Leah Yucius (Duxbury, Mass.) got a run down the left side. She crossed it into the box where Robbins tried a header with a wide-open net but her shot clanged off the left post. The ricochet rolled back to Yucius who sent it toward the net where it was redirected by Rachel Oster (Scituate, R.I.) but Paine was there to make the stop.

Unfortunately for Roger Williams, that would be the best chance they would have to get even and in the second half they were outshot 11-6 including 4-3 in shots on goal.

Overall, the Fighting Scots took 20 shots against nine for RWU, while also taking eight shots on frame against four for the Hawks, and received more corner kicks, 6-1.

What's Next
For Roger Williams, that likely concludes their season as they will have to hope to earn an at-large bid in the NCAA Tournament.

For the Fighting Scots, they earn an automatic bid in the NCAA Tournament by winning the conference and they will find out their opponent during the NCAA Selection Show on Monday.
