How It Happened
Roger Williams kicked off the game with back-to-back three by
Mac Annus (Belmont, Mass.) and
Eli Harris (Falmouth, Mass.) before seven quick points put Curry up by one. Another three by Harris would spark a 9-0 run for Roger Williams, putting the Hawks up 15-7 with 13:57 left in the half.
The Hawks continued to roll, with
Justin Tedeschi (Smithfield, R.I.) knocking down a trey with 12:05 left to give RWU a 13-point lead, their largest to that point. The Colonels would not be deterred, responding with a 14-4 run to pull within three (23-26) with just under nine minutes in the half. Curry kept things close with RWU until a jumper by Angelo Sardegna (Tampa, Fla.) regained the lead for Curry with 1:29 to play in the first. Yet
Drew Hart (Cheshire, Conn.) closed out the half for the Hawks with a layup and a three-pointer to put RWU up 48-44 entering halftime.
Roger Williams would build their lead to ten over the first five minutes into the second half, going up 61-51. Yet the Colonels would not go away with JayQuan Leonard (Plymouth, Mass.) tying the game at 63 with a fastbreak layup and later putting Curry up 66-65 with a three pointer with 10:37 left to play.
Curry took its largest lead on a Todd Robinson Jr. (Brockton, Mass.) layup, making it 72-67 with 9:03 left. From there, the Hawks went on a scoring barrage, putting up 15 points in a four-minute stretch to turn a five-point deficit into an eight-point lead with just over five minutes left. That run by Roger Williams helped give RWU the cushion they would need to hold on the rest of the way.
