How It Happened
Andrew Gaffney and
Matt Halpin helped the Hawks to an early 2-0 lead with goals in the first four minutes of play. Ben Coakley would put Wentworth on the board with a score at the 9:35 mark, followed by another goal five minutes later to tie the game at two.
Jared Grier would convert a
Peter Navarro (Londonderry, N.H.) goal with just under two and a half to play to put the Hawks back up by one going into the second.
In the second, RWU would roll off four unanswered goals in the first four minutes of play including two within the first minute to take a 7-2 lead. The Leopards would not be deterred, with Nick Gore scoring twice as part of a 3-0 run to pull Wentworth within two. Yet a Halpin man-up goal at 2:41 allowed RWU to take an 8-5 lead into halftime.
Both teams would have trouble finding the back of the net throughout most of the third quarter, as neither side scored in the first 12 minutes of the period. Then in the final three minutes, it would be all RWU, as the Hawks closed out the quarter with three goals including one in the final seconds of the quarter.
Wentworth halted the run early in the fourth with a goal by Matt Shultz in the opening minute, but that would be all the Leopards were allowed. Roger Williams tallied six scores over a seven-minute stretch to build the lead to 11, rolling to the win.
The win for RWU sets up a de-facto play-in game on Saturday against Curry for the final CCC Tournament spot.
