Fresh off their 12
th Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship in 2019, the Roger Williams University Women's Cross Country team looks to defend their crown entering 2021.
"We are a pretty small team this fall, but everyone came back for the pre-season fit and ready to go," Head Coach
Sean Livingston said. "I see them willing to put the work in so they can all set personal records!"
Projected Top-Seven
The Hawks' top returner this season is senior
Amanda Naylor. Naylor is an accomplished runner during here time in Bristol and currently ranks tied for 20
th in program history in both the 5K and 6K. Her personal best time of 24:20 in the 6K at the CCC Championship in 2019 led to a 17
th place finish. She looks to take over as RWU's top runner this season and hopes to compete for an all-conference spot.
She will likely be followed by junior
Leah Whearty. Whearty earned 22
nd place at the CCC Championship as a freshman in 2019 finishing with a time of 25:02.36. Her personal best times sit just outside the top-25 in program history, but she looks to break into that group this season and could be a dark horse to compete for an all-conference spot.
The team also returns seniors
Laini Pizzitola and
Emma Maywalt, who Livingston believes are poised for breakout seasons. Pizzitola earned herself a top-50 finish at the CCC Championship in 2019 with a time of 26:41.13. Maywalt also competed at the Championship race finishing 82
nd with a time of 29:43.98.
Junior
Ali Henderson and sophomore
Caitlin Boufford are the only other returners from the Hawks roster last season. Henderson finished 50
th at the CCC Championship back in 2019 with a time of 26:52.85. Boufford also returns to compete in her first collegiate season. Both runners figure to play a role in the Hawks' top-seven.
In addition, the freshman duo of
Sophie Marcille and
Carolyn Narahara both will look to factor into the top-seven for RWU.
Overall
In a wide-open field in the CCC, the Hawks should have the firepower to compete to defend their conference championship in their return to the course.
"I think this year's group is going to be a really fun group to coach," Livingston said.
The Hawks return to the course when they compete at the Suffolk Invitational in Boston, Massachusetts on Friday, September 3
rd.
