WORCESTER, Mass. – For the Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team, their first win away from Bayside Field remained allusive, as they could not take down number-six regionally ranked Worcester Polytechnic Institute at Alumni Stadium on Tuesday evening, falling 5-0. This is the first time the Engineers have gotten the better of the Hawks, as RWU had won the three previous meetings between the two clubs.
With the loss, RWU falls to 2-4-2 on the season including 0-3-2 when they have to hit the road. Meanwhile, WPI improves to 4-2-1 on the season.
The Hawks struggled to apply any pressure in the contest as they were outshot 22-4 by the Engineers, and as a result were shutout for the fourth time this season.
John Padavano (Flemington, N.J.) started for Roger Williams in goal, facing 11 shots on net, making six saves, but allowing five goals to fall to 0-2-0 in net.
The Engineers split time between Ryan Martin (Douglas, Mass.) and Roe Hendrick (Nashua, N.H.). Martin got the start and despite not facing a shot, did get credited for the win to improve to 4-1-1. Hendrick relieved him at the halftime and handled a pair of saves in the second half.

How It Happened
WPI wasted little time jumping on the board in this one, opening the scoring in the second minute of the contest. The ball was loose after getting pinballed around off the heads of multiple RWU defenders in the Hawks defensive zone before it found its way to Anthony Previte (Andover, Mass.). He took a shot that was saved but also had a firm rebound directly to Michael Magalhaes (East Freetown, Mass.) in the center of the box. He shot the ball into the right side of the net for his first goal of the season.
The Engineers added another one in 22
nd minute. Evan Hallberg (Glocester, R.I.) sent a long pass into the Roger Williams zone.
John Padavano (Flemington, N.J.) attempted to come out and corral the ball near the top to the 18-yard box, but Francesco Valagussa (Arlington, Mass.) beat him to the spot and chipped the ball over his head and into the net for his first score of the year.
WPI entered the half with the edge in shots, 10-2, shots on goal, 4-0, and corner kicks, 3-2. However, the Hawks were still within striking distance.
The Engineers pulled away in the second half, and they netted their third score of the game in the 64
th minute. WPI got a breakaway opportunity for Aaron Vaz (Medford, Mass.) after he beat a defender down the field. He took a shot one-on-one against Padavano who made the save diving to his right. However, Padavano got a bad ricochet as it went off his hand, off the cross bar, and stayed loose in front to a waiting Walter Rodriguez (Bayamon, P.R.) who had the entire net to work with and he tapped it in for his first goal of the year.
WPI got another score in the 83
rd minute of play. The Engineers got the ball deep in RWU territory and a lot of congestion in front of the net. Their first shot was blocked, their second shot, by Alejandro Clermont-Delgado (San Francisco, Calif.), was saved, and then things really got weird. The rebound off Padavano went to Matthew McLellan (Hopedale, Mass.) who took a shot and, with Padavano out of position due to the prior save, he had no chance to make the stop. However, an RWU defender went and tried to make a defensive save and did except the ball had crossed the end line for McLellan's second score of the season.
The hosts tacked on one more in the 89
th minute as McLellan sent a cross from right to left for Filippo Marantoni (Ponti sul Mincio, Italy) who netted his first goal on the year to round out the scoring.
Overall, the Engineers controlled the ball very well, as they outshot the Hawks, 22-4, had more shots on goal, 11-2, and received more corner kicks, 6-3.
