Men’s Soccer Rolls Past Curry Behind Beltran’s Pair Of Goals

MILTON, Mass. - Javi Beltran (Madrid, Spain) tallied two goals along with an assist to lead the Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team to a 5-1 victory over Commonwealth Coast Conference foe Curry College on Friday afternoon at Walter M. Katz Field. Four different Hawks recorded a goal while the five total scores by the team was the most by the squad in a single game since 2017 when they scored five against Eastern Nazarene.

With the win, the Hawks grab their first victory away from Bayside Field on the year while moving to 3-4-2 on the campaign, including 2-0-0 in conference matchups, making it the third consecutive season they have begun conference play with a mark of 2-0-0. On the other side, the Colonels fall to RWU for the 12th time in the last 14 matchups between the two squads, while dropping to 2-2-3, 0-1-1 against CCC competition.

Beltran's pair of scores for Roger Williams gave him five goals scored across the team's first two games against conference competition and is a mark that is believed to be the most in program history.

As a team, the nine goals scored in their first two CCC matchups is the most since they recorded ten back in 2011.

Both teams ended up going with a timeshare in goal. John Padavano (Flemington, N.J.) got the nod for the Hawks and earned his first career win by making one save while allowing one goal in 69 and a half minutes in net to improve to 1-2-0 on the season. Hogan Cain (Nottingham, N.H.) played the final 20:30 and did not face a shot. Curry started Kyle Tremblay (Methuen, Mass.) who was under duress while he was in the game and allowed five goals while making four saves as he got tagged with the loss to fall to 1-2-3 on the year. Mateo Peguri (Auburn, N.H.) relieved him, and did not record a save over the final ten minutes and change.

How It Happened
The Hawks buried the Colonels early in this one, scoring four goals in the first half and it was Jack Wetzel (Northport, N.Y.) who got the party started in the 14th minute. Javi Beltran (Madrid, Spain) controlled the ball for RWU and moved to top right portion of 18-yard box. He then chipped the ball over the heads of a pair of defenders to a wide-open Wetzel on the left side and he headed it into the net for his first goal of the season.

Roger Williams scored their second goal in the 29th minute. Justin Horvath (Stratford, Conn.) took a shot from the top right corner of 18-yard box, but it clanged off the cross bar. However, the rebound found its way to Beltran from the top of six-yard box straight away and he, chipped it in for his fifth score of the season.

Beltran struck again just two minutes later as he split a pair of defenders on the left side of the box and won the footrace to receive a good feed from John Fogarty (Scituate, Mass.). His efforts were rewarded as he got a one-on-one chance against the goalkeeper from just beyond the right post, and he went low on the short side of the net for his second score to the contest in the 31st minute.

RWU got one more right before the break in the 45th minute. John McCarthy (Hampstead, N.H.) got the ball out wide on the right side and split a double team to get some space just beyond 18-yard box off the left post. He proceeded to blast a shot high on the right side of the goal for the first goal of his collegiate career.

In the first half, the Hawks dominated the ball, outshooting Curry 15-2 including 6-0 in shots on goal. They also received the only three corner kicks of the half.

The Colonels got on the board in the 52nd minute as they received a free kick following a penalty on RWU. Zach Schultz (Walpole, Mass.) took the kick from about 35 yards away just off the right sideline and he went straight for the net shooting into the top right corner of the goal for the score.

Roger Williams got it back in the 55th minute however, as CJ Sousa (Fall River, Mass.) corralled the ball deep in the Curry defensive zone on the right side. He then proceeded to send a long crossing pass to the opposite side of box to a waiting Jack Wildermann (Madison, Conn.) who had an open look and he did not miss it recording his first career goal to wrap up the scoring.

In the win, the Hawks had more shots, 20-6, shots on goal, 9-2, and corner kicks, 8-1 than the Colonels.

Coach's Corner
Our team came ready to play on Friday in our second CCC match. I was very impressed with how our team came out of the gates at the start of the game and was able to take an early lead. He gave our team a lot of confidence especially since we have struggled on the road so far this season. It was fantastic to get our first road win and have the full team contribute in the match. Javi Beltran lead the way with two goals and an assist. We also had the first goal of the year for John McCarthy, Jack Wetzel and Jack Wildermann. We hope to keep the momentum going this week when we play Bridgewater State and Endicott.

What's Next
The Hawks return to Bristol to host Bridgewater State on Tuesday evening for a nonconference matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00.
