Johnson & Wales jumped out to an early lead with a pair of goals in the first five minutes of the game. The Hawks answered back with a goal by Brooklyn Cenatiempo (Trumbull, Conn.) a minute later, taking a pass from Hannah Palmer (Essex Junction, Vt.). Lauren Costanzo (North Andover, Mass.) would tie the game at two apiece with a tally in the 11th minute, yet shortly into the second quarter, Miele logged her first goal of the game to regain the lead for JWU.

The remainder of the quarter would be scoreless, with Johnson & Wales holding onto a 3-2 lead entering halftime. In the third quarter, Margaret Johnson (Bear, Del.) added another score for JWU for a two-goal advantage. That score would prove crucial as RWU score with 23 seconds left in the game to pull within one.
