How It Happened
The Roger Williams Hawks came out ready to play against fellow Rhode Island opponent, the Johnson & Wales Wildcats. The Hawks came out dominant in the first set, starting off with
Katherine Pickard (St. Petersburg, Fla.) who had three kills in a row to get the RWU offense on a roll. Roger Williams maintained the lead the entirety of the set ending with a 19-25 win.
The second set saw lots of back and forth action as neither team claimed a dominant position. Peyton Oliver (Ramsey, N.J.) had a major kill that got JWU back on track after an RWU timeout to earn the largest lead of the set (20-14). The Hawks put up a great fight until the end, but the Wildcats came out victorious with a score of 25-18.
The third set paralleled the second with eight ties and four lead changes. Oliver contributed two kills to get Johnson & Wales going on a bit of a scoring run. Roger Williams would fire back as
Kate Porter (Killingworth, Conn.) and
Tori Melanson (North Attleboro, Mass.) had a huge block to get the match within two (18-20). Pickard recorded a kill to tie it all up at 20-20, and the Hawks were able to come out with the 25-21 win.
The Wildcats came to play in the fourth set as they seemingly took over. Oliver had two kills in the beginning to make the score 5-1 in favor of Johnson & Wales. Sarah Miller (Scarborough, Ontario) helped the Wildcats' momentum with two kills to make the score 18-9. RWU struggled to find their offense and fell to the Wildcats 25-12.
The fifth set started just like all the others as each team went point for point. Oliver started it off for JWU with a huge kill, then Pickard later tied it up with a kill to make it 3-3. From there on out it seemed as though the Wildcats were in it for the long haul. Roger Williams put up a battle but ultimately fell to Johnson and Wales 15-8 in the final set.
