BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University men's soccer team dropped their first Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) contest of the season on Saturday, falling 3-2 to Endicott on Homecoming and Family Weekend.
The Hawks outshot the Gulls 15-9, and 8-3 in shots on net in the contest, with the Gulls taking a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Gulls got on the board early after a foul inside the box gave Endicott an opportunity to score off of a penalty kick. Joe Mepham took the shot at the 1:13 mark of the contest, converting the penalty attempt to take a 1-0 lead. Just over 36 minutes later, Ryan Gerry scored after Codan Foley put the ball into the box on a throw in attempt that Cole Elgin deflected to Ryan Gerry on the other side of the net. Gerry finished the play by burying a shot into the bottom right corner of the net, taking a 2-0 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Joe Akisik scored for Endicott after, Foley used a throw in, that he placed inside the box, that Akisik directed into the net.
Trailing 3-0, the Hawks had a penalty kick goal of their own, after a foul inside the Box gave
Javi Beltran (Madrid, Spain) a penalty kick opportunity, that he buried. The Hawks then used a ferocious attack, as they continued to play in the offensive end, as
Jason Salley (Durham, Conn.) found Beltran, at the top of the box, Beltran then received the pass and moved left to right, before firing a shot into the right corner of the goal, with 2:55 remaining.
The Hawks would be unable to overcome the deficit as they eventually fell to the Gulls.
Roger Williams (9-2-4, 4-1-1 CCC) will travel to Salve Regina on Wednesday, Oct. 19 for a 7 pm matchup against the Seahawks. They will then play at Western New England on Saturday, Oct. 22 before rounding out the regular season on Tuesday, Oct. 25 on Bayside Field.
