Men’s Soccer: Hawks Fly Higher, Roger Williams Defeat Salve Regina

NEWPORT, R.I. – The Roger Williams University men's soccer team picked up a key Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) victory Wednesday evening at Toopa Field, defeating Salve Regina, 1-0.

The Hawks were outshot 18-9, and the Seahawks put two more shots on net in the contest, but Jack Avellar (Orleans, Mass.) made six saves in the contest, keeping a blank sheet for Roger Williams.

The lone goal of the match came with 14 seconds remaining in the first half, when Javi Beltran (Madrid, Spain) found Max Patenaude (Pepperell, Mass.) open for a goal at the 44:46 mark of the match, that Patenaude then converted before the end of the half.

In the second half, Salve Regina doubled up Roger Williams in shots 8-4, but were unable to put a shot by Avellar, who held on for the shutout.

Roger Williams (10-2-4, 5-1-1 CCC) will travel to Western New England on Saturday, Oct. 22 for a noon tilt with the Golden Bears.  The Hawks will then close out the regular season on Tuesday, Oct. 25 against Nichols at 4 pm on Bayside Field.
