BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University field hockey team mounted fourth quarter comeback, but eventually fell to Wesleyan in non-conference play, Wednesday evening at Bayside Field.
The Hawks outshot the Cardinals 19-16, putting 14 shots on net.
Jill Haudenshield (Sykesville, Md.) also tied her career-high eight saves in the contest.
The Cardinals were the ones to break a scoreless tie when Helen Deretchin found Georgia Adams on an open pass, just under 10 minutes into the second quarter, after Adams fired the penalty corner into play.
Leading just 1-0 after the halftime break, Wesleyan broke through again off another penalty corner from Adams, when Deretchin found Melanie Lim, for Lims first goal and Deretchins second point of the game.
The Hawks mounted a ferocious comeback in the fourth quarter, scoring 4:14 into the final period of regulation when

Sara Carney (Franklin, Mass.) open on a pass, cutting the Roger Williams deficit to one.
In the final minute of the contest, the Hawks picked off a pass at midfield while streaking to the net, and were fouled. The Hawks then had a corner opportunity and were able to convert with just over 17 seconds later, when
Elizabeth Duquette (Pittsford, N.Y.) fired a shot past the Wesleyan goalkeeper, off of a pass from
Grace Rocheleau (West Hartford, Conmn.), forcing overtime.
In the overtime period, the Cardinals were able to break through 8:55 into the period when Deretchin scored her first goal of the game after receiving a pass from Kenzie Kelly.
Roger Williams (7-4, 1-2 CCC) will host the University of New England for a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 1 pm before MIT comes to visit on Wednesday, Oct. 12 for non-conference match on Bayside Field.
