Women’s Soccer: Western New England Advances on Penalty Kicks, Hawks Draw Golden Bears in Final Game of Season

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Roger Williams University women's soccer team pushed the No. 1 seed in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) to penalty kicks, but Western New England advanced, 2-2 (7-6).
 
The Hawks were outshot 26-14, and 13-5 in shots on net, but Coco Marrelli (Fairfield, Conn.) made 11 saves in the match as Roger Williams held on as the match went the distance.
 
The Golden Bears were the first to strike with Gabby Sansone scoring 32:39 into the match, giving Western New England a 1-0 lead.  The Hawks responded in the 40th minute when Sofie Morris (Bristol, R.I.) found the back of the net on a ball that was crossed into the bos, after being bounced around off a few WNE defenders, Morris placed the ball just inside the right post.
 
Early in the second half, Danielle McCarthy found Samantha Vitka, and Vitka then scored at the 3:46 mark of the second half.  With the Hawks responding by putting a ball into the box, towards Bianca Robbins (Johnston, R.I.) the Golden Bears keeper, went to play the ball but a play by a Western New England defender, knocked the ball into the goal, leveling the score 2-2.
 
After a scoreless overtime period, the Hawks and Golden Bears were pushed to penalty kicks, the Hawks held a 4-3 lead before the first missed attempt by the Hawks. Robbins and Raffaella Brunetti (North Providence, R.I.) both made their attempts before Emily Chojnicki closed out the scoring in the eighth round of penalty kicks, to help Western New England Advance.
 
Roger Williams (9-9-4, 4-3-2 CCC) close their season in the CCC Semifinals.  The Hawks finish the year with a .500 record on the road, with the Hawks playing the top seeded Golden Bears to a 1-0-1 record. Western New England will host the CCC Tournament Championship on Saturday, Nov. 5.
