BRISTOL, R.I. – It all comes down to this, a Saturday Nov. 5 matchup between No. 4 seeded Suffolk and the No. 2 Roger Williams men's soccer team at 1 pm on Bayside Field for the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championship.
The Hawks enter their first CCC Championship match since 2018, when the Hawks entered the tournament as the No. 5 seed and made a run all the way to the title game before eventually falling to No. 3 Gordon, 1-0, in overtime. This is also the first time the Roger Williams men's soccer team has hosted a CCC Championship game since 2006, when they last won the title.
Suffolk comes into the match as the new face in the conference, joining the CCC during the 2020 season, the Rams reached the CCC Tournament in their first season of competition in 2021. The Rams last conference title came in 2010, when the Rams were victorious in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tournament.
The Rams have posted a 10-5-5 record this season, playing CCC opponents to a 4-2-3 record. After reaching the tournament, Suffolk advanced in the semifinals, playing to a 3-3 draw with No. 5 Salve Regina, before eventually advancing 5-4 on penalty kicks.
In their semifinal tilt against the No. 2 seed in the CCC Tournament in #23 Endicott, the Rams used key goals by Matthew Belluardo and Brady Sorensen to down the Gulls 2-0.
Roger Williams come into Saturday's contest with a 13-3-4 record with a 6-2-1 CCC record. They reached the CCC Semifinals, with a 3-2 quarterfinal win against No. 7 Gordon, where
Javi Beltran (Madrid, Spain) scored with 55 seconds remaining in the match to secure the win. The Hawks then repeated the late game heroics, this time off the foot of
CJ Sousa (Fall River, Mass.).
Saturday's contest will take place between the second and third ranked defenses within the CCC, with Roger Williams holding opponents to 1.05 goals per game and Suffolk coming in with a 1.19 goals against average. On the offensive end the Hawks rank six scoring 1.55 goals per game and Suffolk is tied for third with 1.90 goals per contest.
The Rams are led by Sorensen who has 15 points on six goals and three assists and Carter Van Buskirk with five goals and four assists for a total of 14 points. The Rams' Belluardo, Tommy Handelsman, and Taj Jensen all sit at 10 points on the season.
Beltran leads Roger Williams with 29 points with 11 goals and seven assists on the season ranking second in the conference in both goals and points, while sitting third for assists.
Justin Horvath (Stratford, Conn.) ranks second on the squad with 11 points, on four goals and three assists, followed by
John McCarthy (Hampstead, N.H.).
Liam Blaisedell (Plymouth, Mass.) has also added three goals on the year.
In net the Rams look to Xander Balog who has an 1.19 goals against average, with a 10-5-5 record on the year. The Hawks on the other hand have
Jack Avellar (Orleans, Mass.) who has made 12 starts with a 9-2-1 record in those contests with seven shutouts.
