BRISTOL, R.I. – The No. 2 Roger Williams University men's soccer team defeated No. 4 Suffolk, 2-1, Saturday afternoon on Bayside Field as the Hawks locked up their first Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Tournament title in 16 years.
Playing as the host for the CCC Championship game for the first time since 2006, the Hawks were up against a competitive Rams squad, that was able to cut the deficit in half late in the contest.
Both goalkeepers played strong defensively, stepping up to prevent shots on net throughout the contest.
Jack Avellar (Orleans, Mass.) made one save in the match, but Xander Balog, collected six of the eight shots that he faced.
After playing a scoreless first half, the Hawks broke through with a goal after
Niall Shea (Portsmouth, R.I.) hit the ball into
Justin Horvath (Stratford, Conn.) on the heel of his foot, that Horvath then buried into the back of the net, in the 55
th minute of play.
Roger Williams then scored a second time when
CJ Sousa (Fall River, Mass.) put a ball into the box for
Liam Blaisdell (Plymouth, Mass.), who finished it going into the corner of the net, taking a 2-0 lead.
Suffolk with their backs against the wall attempted to mount a comeback, with Jeremy Cook scoring with 1:58 on the clock. Roger Williams was able to hold on for their first CCC Title since they last hosted at Bayside Field in 2006.
Roger Williams (14-3-4, 6-2-1 CCC) will take the CCC automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament next weekend. The Hawks will learn their opponent and the venue of the contest on Monday, Nov. 7 during the NCAA Selection Show.
