NORTON, Mass. — The Roger Williams University women's basketball team took the win over Wheaton in non-conference play Saturday afternoon, 73-44, at the Haas Athletics Center.
Katie Galligan (Pembroke, Mass.) scored 17 points, had six rebounds, and three assists.
Caroline Elie (Rockland, Mass.) had 12 points in the game and seven steals, while
Kendi Barnard (Bedford, N.H.) also scored in the double-digits with 11 points, pulling down six boards with a pair of steals and two assists.
The Hawks gained an early lead on the Lyons, putting 14 points on the board before Wheaton was able to score. A steal was made with five seconds left in the first quarter by
Caroline Aaron (Wrentham, Mass.), who went driving towards the basket for the layup, solidifying the Hawks lead, 25-8.
Six layups were scored in the second quarter, three of them being put in by Elie.
Sophie Araneo (Branford, Conn.) sank a three-point jump shot, assisted by Aaron. At the half the Hawks led, 42-21.
A three-pointer made by
Lizzy Stevenson (Bedford, N.H.) that was followed by a free-throw by Galligan gave the Hawks a 27-point lead in the third quarter. The biggest lead of the game happened in the fourth quarter, with Wheaton trailing behind Roger Williams by 30 points. The Hawks closed out scoring with a layup with 32 seconds remaining in the contest.
The Hawks had more rebounds and steals than the Lyons, 45-31, and 16-6, respectively.
Roger Williams (7-2, 2-0 CCC) will face University of New England following the holiday break on Tuesday, Jan. 3
rd. They then host Salve Regina on Thursday, Jan. 5.
