How It Happened
Things were even through the first quarter of action as the defenses dominated. It took more than ten minutes of game time for a team to break through on the scoreboard as Quin Seivold (Pleasant Valley, Calif.) netted his sixth goal of the season of a dish by Carter Strauch (Alamo, Calif.) for the hosts. Right off the ensuing faceoff,
Tim Mullane (Hanover, Mass.) got things even for RWU with a goal off a feed by
Matt Halpin (Hanover, Mass.) before Strauch got his first of the contest with just under three minutes remaining in the frame. Mullane netted an unassisted goal with 55 seconds left in the stanza to even things again and after one quarter, things were tied at two.
The Hawks grabbed their only lead of the contest early in the second quarter as Halpin scored an unassisted goal to put RWU in the driver's seat, 3-2. It was all Swarthmore from there, however. Ryan Chambliss (Atlanta, Ga.) got things even before Strauch put the Garnet in front with his second score. AJ Darin (Manlius, N.Y.) tied things at four, but Swarthmore closed the half with back-to-back goals to lead 6-4 into the break.
The Garnet rode that momentum into the second half by opening the third by scoring four of the next five goals, with
Jack Kester (Londonderry, N.H.) evenly splitting those tallies with his first goal of the day.
Jared Grier (Quincy, Mass.) found the back of the net just before the end of the third to keep things within striking distance at 10-7.
Swarthmore buried RWU in the fourth. From the 11-minute mark through the 4:30 mark in the quarter, the hosts scored six unanswered goals to get their lead out to nine at 16-7. Grier and
Ryan Phillips (Hanover, Mass.) each scored to get the score more reasonable, but the Hawks fell, 16-9.
In the contest, Roger Williams was outshot 44-27 though the shot on goal tally was fairly even at 25-23 in favor of Swarthmore. The Hawks also committed fewer turnovers, 12-19 but the Garnet dominated the faceoff circle winning 23 of the 29 faceoffs.
