BIDDEFORD, Maine – Justin Garcia (Foxborough, Mass.), graduate student left-handed pitcher for the Roger Williams University Baseball team, matched what is believed to be the program-record for strikeouts in a single game to earn Commonwealth Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week honors for the week of March 21
st through March 27
th as it was announced by the conference offices on Monday. Garcia surrendered a mere one hit while fanning 15 Nichols College Bison in RWU's CCC opening win on Saturday to earn the award.
It is the second time Garcia has received CCC Pitcher of the Week honors for RWU as he previously got the honor for the week of March 9
th through March 15
th in 2020. He is also the second Hawk to receive conference weekly recognition this season after
Tommy Hobin (Madison, Conn.) was named the CCC Player of the Week for the week of March 7
th through March 13
th. The last Roger Williams pitcher to get conference pitcher of the week was
Kyle Schaefer (Madison, Conn.) who got the honor for the week of March 29
th through April 4
th last spring.
Garcia absolutely dominated on the hill in the team's home opener on Saturday. He allowed a double to the first batter of the game but did not allow another hit the rest of the way for RWU, pilling up 15 strikeouts to match his own career and program high, while the mark is also good for a tie for the seventh-most in a single game in Division-III baseball thus far this season. While he did allow four walks on the day, he spread them across his seven innings of shutout baseball, earning the win in the process.
On the season, the three-time All-CCC selection has been virtually untouchable across his four starts allowing a mere six hits and two runs while accumulating 39 strikeouts in 20.1 innings of work on the bump. He owns an outstanding 0.89 ERA so far this spring, a mark that is good for third in the conference and 29
th in the nation among qualifiers, while his 17.26 strikeouts per nine innings is the second-highest number in Division-III baseball and the best in the CCC.
