Baseball Maintains Foothold In Latest Rankings

The Roger Williams University Baseball team continues to roar through the early portion of their schedule, and as a result they have maintained their grip within the most recent set of national and regional polls as it was announced on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Hawks did see themselves drop one spot to number-three in both the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) and New England Baseball Journal (NEBJ) regional rankings while also receiving votes in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA)/D3Baseball.com and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper national rankings.

At the time of the polls, RWU stood at 12-1 on the season boasting the top winning percentage in the region at 92.3%. They are also tied with #3/#11 Eastern Connecticut State University for the most in wins in the region thus far this spring with 12.

"It is great to be recognized, however rankings in March do not really mean much to us," Head Coach Kevin Kelley said. "Obviously, it says you are playing pretty well but I always say it is not how you start, it is how you finish. Like I said last week, every day is a new day and a new record, so we are 0-0. I think we still have not reached out full potential so I am excited to see what we can do moving forward."

The Hawks did suffer their first loss of the season this week with a 12-7 setback at the hands of Worcester Polytechnic Institute last Tuesday, but they rebounded well on Saturday. The team swept their conference-opening twin bill against Nichols College. They took game one 4-2 behind Justin Garcia's (Foxborough, Mass.) 15-strikeout performance, before Christopher Flynn (Randolph, N.J.) launched a pair of home runs to back Chris Flynn's (Naugatuck, Conn.) strong showing on the bump in game two.

As a team, Roger Williams has really impressed thus far this season on both sides of the ball, owning a team triple-slash line of .332/.456/.506 with each of those marks ranking in the top-35 nationally. As a result, they currently stand as the ninth-best scoring offense in the nation, plating 10.8 runs per contest. On the mound, Garcia and Chris Flynn lead a Hawks pitching staff that limits contact, fanning 12.4 batters per nine innings while only surrendering 7.2 hits per nine with both marks ranking sixth nationally. As a result, they own a 3.77 ERA, the 31st best in the nation, and a 1.37 WHIP that ranks 43rd.
