Baseball Maintains Spots In Most Recent Rankings

Despite a down week, the Roger Williams Baseball team remained entrenched at the top of the regional rankings, as it was announced on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Hawks slotted in at number-three in the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) poll and number-five in the New England Baseball Journal (NEBJ) rankings regionally while they also kept hold of a national ranking at #26 according to Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and they continue to receive votes in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA)/D3Baseball.com national poll.

In a week disrupted but mother nature, RWU only played three games last week, all of which were critical Commonwealth Coast Conference showdowns against the reigning CCC finalists, Salve Regina University and Endicott College. The team wound up being plagued by bullpen issues as they tied the Seahawks, 11-11, on Tuesday before the game was called due to sunlight, or lack thereof. Then when they tried to right the ship, they once again squandered a late lead in game one to drop both games to the Gulls, 3-2 and 6-1. As a result, Roger Williams dropped to 17-3-1 on the season, at the time of the poll, a mark that is still quite formidable and has them ranked tenth in the nation in win percentage at .833, the third best among teams in region.

The Hawks are anchored by a pitching staff that continues to shut down the opposition this season. They sit in the top-50 in Division-III baseball in hits allowed per nine innings (7.63, 7th), strikeouts per nine innings (11.0, 8th), ERA (3.86, 30th), and WHIP (1.36, 40th). Not to be outdone, the offense also sits 30th in the nation averaging 9.4 runs per game in large part due to their ability to get on base and wreak havoc when they get there as they are 33rd in steals per game (2.62) and own a team OBP of .430 (40th).
