How It Happened

After a collection of early turnovers by both the Coast Guard Academy and Roger Williams, it was the home team that went on an early man advantage after Nate Gee (Big Flats, N.Y.) was sent to the box for an offsides penalty. Unfortunately, the Hawks were unable to capitalize on the advantage, and a few minutes later, it was the Bears' Caleb Holdridge (Waterford, Conn.) who tallied the first goal of the game. Not too long after, Hunter Goodrow (Hopkinton, Mass.) went to the box giving the Coast Guard their first advantage of the game, and with 13 seconds left on the penalty, Ian Feely (Spring Branch, Texas) snuck one past Max Kimmel (Milford, Conn.) to get the Bears up two.

Just 45 seconds into the second frame, the Coast Guard extended their lead as Holdridge scooped a ground ball then fired one to the back of the net. Jake Frissora (Sudbury, Mass.) then got a 30 second holding penalty before Gee scored with the advantage to extend the lead to four. Just after the nine minute mark in the quarter, Tim Mullane (Hanover, Mass.) got the Hawks on the board after sending a laser past Dan Lucas (Weston, Conn.). The next four minutes highlighted the toughness between both teams as players traded hits and turnovers before Holdridge scored two of the next three for the Bears as they took a 7-1 lead into the break.

A one-minute penalty against the Coast Guard's Patrick Raymond (Laurel, Md.) led to a handful of shots by the Hawks, but they once again could not capitalize on the advantage. The back and forth between the two squads continued until Holdridge once again scored for the visitors. The next few minutes still were not going the Hawks way as Trevor Brooks (Milford, Mass.) was called for a one-minute slashing penalty. Immediately after the penalty time expired, Goodrow went back to the penalty box, this time for a delay of game. The Hawks were able to burn off both of those penalties without any damage done. With 6:45 left in the quarter, Gaige Kruger (Coronado, Calif.) notched the Bear's ninth goal of the game, and simultaneously, AJ DaRin (Manlius, N.Y.) notched the Hawks fifth penalty after being called for an illegal body check. The Hawks defense once again clamped down, killing the penalty which led to more back and forth between the two competitors. The Bears once again scored with Gee tallying his fifth with just over 1:30 left in the third quarter.

The Hawks, trailing by nine with just one quarter remaining, looked to start getting aggressive on the offensive end. Jared Grier (Quincy, Mass.) started off the scoring for the Hawks, potting one just 43 seconds into the quarter. One minute later, Matt Halpin (Hanover, Mass.) scored one of his own to cut the Bears lead down to seven. With just under 7:30 left, two Bears took a trip to the box as Feely was called for a slash, and Ryan Hunter (Bethesa, Md.) was called for unsportsmanlike conduct. These two calls gave the Hawks a two man advantage which Grier capitalized on, scoring his second of the game. The Bears rebounded, as Holdridge tallied his eighth point of the night, and getting the Coast Guard back to a seven goal lead. Less than a minute later, Jack Kester (Londonderry, N.H.) rifled one past Lucas to get the Hawks back to a six goal deficit with 4:30 left. With 30 seconds left in the game, Ryan Phillips (Hanover, Mass.) scored his first goal of the game to get the Hawks within five, and Noah Ravas (Baldwinsville, N.Y.)  buried one as time expired, making the final score 11-7.
