Men’s Tennis Concludes Regular Season With Shutout Of Wentworth

BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University Men's Tennis team finished their regular-season slate with a 9-0 shutout of the Wentworth Institute of Technology on Sunday afternoon. After the match was postponed due to rain basically before the opening serve on Tuesday, the contest was shifted to Bristol and the outcome was unchanged as the Hawks improved to 32-1 all-time against the Leopards and are winners of the last 22 meetings.

RWU finishes the regular season with a 14-2 record, and while there are still a few matches left to be hashed out across the Commonwealth Coast Conference, they are locked into the second seed entering the postseason as they are 7-1 in conference play. The Leopards also put the finishing touches on their regular season, finishing 6-8 overall and 5-3 against CCC foes and they too are locked into their postseason seed as the #4 team entering the tournament since Endicott College holds the tiebreaker over them.

Hawk Highlights
This one got out of hand quickly for Wentworth as Roger Williams dominated doubles play dropping just a pair of points on their way to a 3-0 lead in the match. The lone shutout in doubles came in the third flight where Tyler Cain (Montpelier, Vt.) and Matt Glassman (West Hartford, Conn.) blanked Aidan Gordon (Douglas, Mass.) and Kevin Shields (East Longmeadow, Mass.), 8-0. Meanwhile, the scores in the #1 and #2 matchups in doubles would mirror each other as 8-1 wins in favor of the Hawks. Jon Trevethan (Berlin, Conn.) and Dan Tocco (East Quogue, N.Y.) completed their flawless spring with a win over Pranav Marawah (Nashua, N.H.) and Kevin Soloman (West Newton, Mass.) in the topflight. Alongside them, Johnny Baldyga (Simsbury, Conn.) and Ryan Schuck (Glastonbury, Conn.) took care of business against Daniel Gallegos (Monterrey, Mexico) and Malo Legouin (Nanterre, France) in the #2 doubles match.

The singles matches were more competitive but nonetheless landslide victories in favor of the hosts. Trevethan rolled Soloman, 6-2, 6-2 in the topflight while Tocco beat Gallegos by nearly the same score, 6-3, 6-2 in the two's matchup. Down on the bottom court, RWU was flexing their depth as Baldyga had little trouble beating Sam Ferro (Whitman, Mass.), 6-1, 6-1 while Arlex Correa (Lynnfield, Mass.) posted a clean sheet against Owen Conlon (Cataumet, Mass.), 6-0, 6-0. The middle court would see the best tennis action of the day. In the fourth flight Schuck beat Legouin, 6-0, 6-2 but it was a much different story in the #3 singles match. There, Glassman and Marwaha went blow for blow, requiring tie-breaker points in the second set but the Hawks freshman prevailed, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).

What's Next
The next stop for Roger Williams is the postseason as they will wait and see how the remainder of the conference schedule hashes out over the coming days before their opponent is determined. No matter the case, they will host the Quarterfinals match next Saturday, April 30th.
