Pitching Looks Sharp In Surprising Split With Wentworth

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Softball team split with the Wentworth Institute of Technology Leopards on Sunday at Paolino Field.

Lia Nocella (Tyngsboro, Mass.) was dominant once again in the circle, tossing her 21st career complete game, moving her up into a tie for ninth all-time in program history contributing towards the 6-2 game one win. In game two, Nicole Corey (Dighton, Mass.) came in as a reliever, and tossed 4.1 scoreless innings, but defensive miscues would prove costly in a 7-3 loss.

How it Happened
After steady pitching by both squads in the first two frames, it would be Roger Williams claiming the first run. Jax Beaulieu (Sandwich, Mass.) tapped an infield single before advancing to second on a swinging-bunt groundout to third by Casey Uryga (Berlin, Conn.). Sydney Provencal (Cumberland, R.I.) would bring Beaulieu across the final two bags with a single of her own. Wentworth tied things up in the fourth, scoring an unearned run, but that would be all they could muster in the frame.

The Roger Williams bats would come alive in the bottom of the fourth as Francesca Cioffi (Brewster, N.Y.) drew a leadoff walk. The hosts would then utilize Caroline Thomas (Cranston, R.I.) as a pinch runner, and she would reach third over the next two batters after Maddie Predaris (Rye, N.H.) logged a single, and Madison Tobin (Pittsfield, Mass.) flewout to right deep enough to allow for an advance. Alexandra Lombardo (Thomaston, Conn.) followed by blasting her fourth double of the season, allowing Thomas to complete her journey around the diamond. Uryga made her presence felt as she would also flare a double, deflected by the leftfielder, driving home Predaris and Lombardo, giving RWU a 4-1 lead.

The home squad rocketed a pair of doubles to center field, but nothing came of it as the two baserunners would be left stranded in scoring position in the fifth. They would not be similarly rejected in the sixth inning, when the Hawks would notch two more runs. Lombardo doubled once again, this time down the leftfield line. RWU then deployed a pair of situational players as Emma MacLean (Newton, Mass.) pinch ran for the veteran first baseman, and Alex Burdick (Jewett City, Conn.) would pinch hit for Beaulieau. The substitutions would pay off as the Burdick would drive in McLean on a single to center. Beaulieau would reenter to run for her own pinch hitter, and would cross home on a Provencal single off Wentworth's reliever, Kayla DeMedeiros (South Dartmouth, Mass.) before the inning would end on a ground out.

Facing a conference loss, and a disadvantage count, Briana Beverly (Pawcatuck, Conn.) would homer, bringing the Leopards one run closer to the Hawks. Wentworth kept making some hard contact, but nothing would be made of it, as Alexandra Pina (Cumberland, R.I.) logged the Leopards first out of the frame before Aurora Wilks (Fruitport, Mich.) singled to left. The pinch runner for Wilks, Abby Morin (Dudley, Mass.), would advance to second on a wild pitch before Nocella would complete the game with back-to-back groundouts by DeMedeiro and Ceilidh Higgins (Medway, Mass.).

How It Happened
A shaky first three innings featured the Hawks defense recording three errors, allowing seven total runs in the process. Of those seven runs, only three would be earned runs charged against the two pitchers the RWU deployed in the first 2.2 innings. Roger Williams then brought Nicole Corey (Dighton, Mass.) into the action, and it was a decision that would pan out. Corey went the rest of the way, allowing only one hit and one walk while not allowing either base runner to cross the plate.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Hawks offense came back to life following their six-run output in the days first contest. Sydney Provencal (Cumberland, R.I.) took a walk as the Hawks second batter in the inning before Emma MacLean (Newton, Mass.) would knock a single to third. This would be followed up by Taylor Howell (Sandwich Mass.) hitting a grounder to the shortstop that would go right through the wickets for an error. Provencal wound up scoring an unearned run on the play.

Roger Williams would notch their first earned run of the game against game-two starter Kayla DeMedeiros (South Dartmouth, Mass.) after Madison Tobin (Pittsfield, Mass.) legged-out a double that was deflected by the shortstop leading Jax Beaulieu (Sandwich, Mass.) to drive her home on a single to left center. The Hawks final run of the game, like the first run, was unearned as three more errors by the Wentworth shortstop allowed Hawks to touch the bags safely. A groundout would end the inning, leaving two runners stranded. RWU threatened a comeback in the seventh with the first two batters of the inning reaching on singles before two fielder's choice's would lead to a groundout to thwart the effort, giving Wentworth the game two victory, 7-3.
