Continuing their torrid start to the 2022 season, the Roger Williams University Baseball team cracked into the top-25 for the first time in program history, slotting in at 22
nd in the nation in Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's national poll as they were announced on Tuesday and Wednesday. In addition to their ranking by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, the Hawks are also knocking on the door of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA)/D3Baseball.com national poll. Meanwhile, regionally they retained their number-three spot in the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) poll and moved up to number-two in the New England Baseball Journal (NEBJ) rankings.
Â
RWU currently stands as quite simply, the winningest team in all of Division III baseball. At the time of the poll, the Hawks were 17-1 on the year and that record earned some external validity this week, navigating a gauntlet of regional foes along the way. They opened the week by handling Bridgewater State, 13-8 before following that up with back-to-back eye-opening wins over annual national powerhouse UMass-Boston 9-7 on Wednesday and then 4-3 over Babson College on Thursday. The baseball team could have let their huge midweek slate lead to a letdown weekend, but they instead swept a critical conference doubleheader sweep of Suffolk University winning 9-5 and 8-3.
Â
As a team, Roger Williams is littered throughout the statistical leaderboards. They presently stand within the top-50 in K/9 (11.1, 9
th), hits allowed per nine innings (7.75, 10
th), scoring offense (10.2, 11
th), OBP (.451, 13
th), steals per game (2.84, 23
rd), ERA (3.91, 33
rd), batting average (.331, 34
th), slugging percentage (.495, 43
rd), triples per game (.53, 46
th), and WHIP (1.37, 49
th).
