BIDDEFORD, Maine –Ben Bonavita (East Longmeadow, Mass.),
Justin Garcia (Foxborough, Mass.), and
Brandon Jenkins (East Bridgewater, Mass.), each made the first team, leading seven members of the Roger Williams University Baseball team to receive All-Commonwealth Coast Conference recognition, as it was announced by the conference offices on Tuesday.
Making the second team for RWU are
Tyler Cedeno (Maynard, Mass.),
Chris Flynn (Naugatuck, Conn.), and
Christopher Flynn (Randolph, N.J.) while
Connor Hewlette (Deer Park, N.Y.) made the third team. The seven selections by the Hawks are the third-most of all CCC teams and their trio of first teamers are tied for the second-most.
A jack-of-all-trades who has been the team's primary right fielder but has also seen significant time pitching this season, Bonavita makes the All-CCC team for the second-consecutive year at the utility spot, rising to the first team this season. A bigtime power threat, his 16 extra-base hits rank 16
th in the conference while his five home runs are also tied for 16
th. The senior has posted a .296/.443/.556 triple-slash with his OBP ranking 15
th in the CCC while his slugging is 13
th. This season, Bonavita has set career-highs in doubles, RBIs, runs scored, steals, walks, and OBP. Also a weapon on the mound, the captain has a 2-1 record this season, locking down one save.
Speaking of weapons on the mound, Garcia has been among the CCC's best for the past several seasons and it culminated in his first all-conference first team selection, and fourth overall. The Hawks' ace has posted a 5-1 record while pitching to a sparkling 1.40 ERA, striking out 14.36 batters per nine innings, and totaling 82 strikeouts with each number ranking second in the conference. Across his six starts in CCC play, the lefty has the lowest ERA (0.55) and highest strikeouts per nine (15.27) marks in the league and has allowed a mere five total runs with just two of them earned. In the national ranks, his ERA and K/9 are good for tenth. He has also only surrendered 4.21 hits per nine innings, the third fewest in the nation and only four of the hits he has allowed have gone for extra-bases.
The final member of the Hawks to make the first team was Jenkins who rose from the second team to earn all-conference recognition for the second-straight year as possibly the most feared hitter in the CCC. Jenkins brushed off a slow Florida trip for his standards, to absolutely shell in-conference pitching. The graduate student is the team leader among qualifiers in triple-slash at .357/.472/.643, with each of those marks ranking in the top-ten in the conference. Jenkins sits atop the CCC in doubles (17) and also leads the team and ranks eighth in the conference in RBIs (41). His seven home runs are tied for ninth in the CCC. Against conference foes, the first baseman has been nearly impossible to get out, posting a .429/.544/.794 triple-slash, leading the CCC in doubles (9) and ranking second in RBIs (20) along the way.
Just missing out on first team honors for RWU was
Chris Flynn. The graduate student shifted to the rotation from the bullpen where he was an All-CCC First Team selection a season ago and he could not have had much better results as he has a 0.83 WHIP that is the best on the team, ranks third in the conference, and 11
th nationally. Flynn comprised of the second half of RWU's dominant one-two punch atop their rotation, as his 2.04 ERA ranked fourth in the league and 43
rd in the nation, and his 13.25 strikeouts per nine was third in the CCC and 26
th in Division-III Baseball. He piled up the fourth-most strikeouts of any pitcher in the conference with 78 all while walking just nine batters. His resulting 8.67 K/BB ratio ranks 17
th in the nation and is the best in the CCC. The righty has a team-high six wins this season tossing the Hawks' lone complete game in a masterful performance against #2 nationally ranked Eastern Connecticut State and has even added a save for good measure.
A pair of outfielders join Flynn on the second team starting with
Tyler Cedeno who makes the squad for the second year in a row. The team's leadoff hitter for much of the year, Cedeno reached base safely in all but three of the 36 games he has played in this season, posting a .327/.442/.524 triple-slash along the way. The team's leading run scorer crossed the plate 41 times this year, the sixth most in the conference, but he also served as a run producer, finishing tied for tenth with 36 RBI. The graduate student provided plenty of pop from the top of the lineup, finishing with 19 extra-base hits, among them four home runs, two triples, and 13 doubles, the later of which ranks fifth in the CCC. Cedeno also has 15 steals on the season to rank fourth in the league.
Right behind him in steals is the other Flynn,
Christopher Flynn who transferred to RWU from Penn State-Harrisburg and has made his presence known in his first season in the conference. He encountered a slow stretch mid-season, but he nonetheless ranks 25
th in the CCC in batting average at .323 and his .624 slugging is eighth. He leads the Hawks with eight longballs this season, a mark that tied for the sixth most in the CCC and he has done most of his damage in the games that matter most, with seven of his home runs coming in CCC play, the second-most of all players in the conference. He also has 14 steals this season, a number that ranks fifth, 37 RBIs to rank ninth, and ten doubles to rank tied for tenth.
Rounding out the All-CCC selections is Hewlette who makes his return to the list for the first time since earning conference Pitcher of the Year honors as a sophomore. Hewlette has bounced between the rotation and the bullpen but has really seemed to find a home as the Hawks top reliever in the second half of the season. He owns a 2.65 ERA to rank third on the team among players with at least 25 innings pitched. The graduate student owns a 3-0 record and has a pair of saves this season to rank second on the team and his 9.26 K/9 would rank tenth in the CCC if it qualified.
