BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Roger Williams University Athletics Department claimed runner-up finishes in the Commonwealth Coast Conference in the Men's and Women's CCC All-Sports Trophies, as it was announced by the conference offices on Tuesday. The Hawks rode their trio CCC crowns to finish behind just Endicott College in the standings for both trophies.
The winning schools for the CCC All-Sports trophies are determined by the school's finishes in each of the 20 sports sponsored by the conference. In each sport, points are awarded based on CCC championship and runner-up finishes in the conference tournament, followed by the regular-season finish of the remaining teams. The CCC Tournament Champion receives ten points and the CCC Tournament runner-up receives nine points.
On the women's side, the Hawks stood in second from wire-to-wire. They were buoyed by their CCC title-winning Women's Basketball and Lacrosse teams. However, they also got a big boost from the conference-finalist teams in Women's Soccer, Tennis, and Volleyball. RWU competes in nine of the ten CCC sponsored sports and came away with an average score of 7.61.
For the men, they only had a single championship team this year, with that being the Men's Cross Country team in the fall, though they added another CCC runner-up in Men's Tennis this spring. However, consistency across each of the eight conference-sponsored sports proved critical as they only had one team net fewer than six points. As a result, the average score on the men's side came out as 7.31.
The CCC All-Sports Trophy has been awarded after each academic year since 2013-14 with the exception of the COVID-shortened 2019-20 and 2020-21 campaigns. In the women's standings, Roger Williams has never finished outside of the top-three and rose from their finish in 2018-19 when they came in third. They have not taken the top spot in the Women's All-Sports Trophy since 2015-16 when they won their second of back-to-back crowns. On the men's side, RWU has only finished outside the top-two in the standings once since the trophy began getting distributed. They finished short of defending their 2018-19 title this year.
