Field Hockey: Roger Williams Takes Win in Home Opener

BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University field hockey team played in their first home game of the season Saturday afternoon, defeating Springfield, 5-1.

This was the first all-time meeting between the Roger Williams and Springfield field hockey teams.

Springfield scored the first goal less than a minute into the contest, the Hawks were not far behind with Chelsea King (Schenectady, N.Y.) scoring the first goal for Roger Williams 1:09 later. The first quarter proved to be eventful for the Hawks as Hannah Timbrouck (Kingston, N.Y.) and King added additional goals with Roger Williams taking a 3-1 lead, scoring three goals over a span of 5:02.

Goalie Jill Haudenshield (Sykesville, Md.) held strong, blocking both of the shots that came her way after allowing the goal.

King scored again in the third quarter before Cecily Paglierani (Topsfield, Mass.), who scored her first goal of the season off of a pass from Kelly Doherty (Mansfield, Mass.).

Roger Williams (3-0, 0-0 CCC) will defend their perfect record on Wednesday, Sept. 14 against Westfield State at 7 pm. The Hawks field hockey squad will then begin their conference slate, facing Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opponent Endicott on Saturday, Sept. 17.
