BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University women's tennis team earned a key Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) victory on Wednesday night at the Roger Williams University Tennis Courts, defeating Nichols 5-4.
In doubles play, the Bison picked up the first point of the match with an 8-6 win, before the Hawks first doubles pairing of
Emma Place (Francestown, N.H.) and
Alessia Cahoon (Dedham, Mass.) for an 8-7 win over their opponents.
Gianna Ferraro (Westerly, R.I.) and
Gracie McCarthy (Marion, Mass.) then closed out with a second doubles victory defeating Jordan Knowles and Johanna Schroeder, 8-6.
Leading 2-1 entering singles, Cahoon dropped her match in third singles, and the Hawks fell in their third sixth singles match to fall behind 3-2 in the match. A win by
Izzy Pecora (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) in fifth singles leveled the match before a win by Ferraro in second singles took the lead at 4-3. A fourth singles win by Nichols' Schroeder, leveled the match at 4-4 entering the final match.
After dropping the opening set 6-3 to Carrero, the Hawks' Place scored a 6-3 victory in the second set, before closing out the win by winning the third set 6-3 closing out a match between No. 2 and No. 3 team in last seasons CCC Tournament and this seasons CCC Preseason Poll.
Roger Williams (7-0, 3-0 CCC) is scheduled to host UMass Boston on Thursday, Sept. 22 at 4 pm. The Hawks will then face Salve Regina in CCC play on Saturday, Sept. 24 at noon.
