BRISTOL, R.I.-- The Roger Williams men's basketball team went with 55 points in the second half to overtake Wentworth, defeating the Leopards, 77-53.
The top four scorers for the Hawks all scored in double figures, with Nate Lopes (Scituate, Mass.) and Mac Annus (Belmont, Mass.) scoring 18 points each. Max Manjos (Monroe, Conn.) finished the game with 12 points, while John Ah Kao (Dumont, N.J.) and Ty Higgins (New Marlborough, Mass) added 10 points of their own off the bench. Lopes also had 10 rebounds and two assists.
On the Leopards side, Sam Goy led the team with 11 points scored. Tyler Stewart and Niko Rosich had eight points apiece.
Philip Sughrue (Winchester, Mass.) put the Hawks on the scoreboard with a driving layup. Moments later, Sughrue scored on another layup. The Leopards did not back down and surpassed the Hawks five minutes into the first half. As they began to pull farther ahead, Annus sank a three-pointer to close the gap. Halfway through the period, another three-pointer was scored, this time by Higgins off a steal. Annus scored a layup, intercepting a pass from Wentworth and driving to the basket, tying the score at 21. Wentworth pulled ahead moments later, ending the half up, 26-22.
Starting off the second half, Annus and Will MacDonald (York, Maine) each scored from layups to tie up the score. Lopes and Annus sank three-pointer shots to pull the Hawks ahead. A total of nine three-point shots were scored in the half. Annus made a layup to give Roger Williams a 30-point lead with just over 6 minutes left in the period. Lopes closed out scoring for the Hawks with a layup.
The Hawks outdid the Leopards in blocks, 2-1, steals, 5-3, and edged out Wentworth, 35-34, on the glass.
Roger Williams (10-6, 7-2 CCC) will be on the road as they take on Curry this Saturday, Jan. 21 at 3pm. They will then host Suffolk on Tuesday, Jan. 24.
