Men’s Basketball: Hawks Overcome Slow Start, Complete Regular Season Sweep of Curry

MILTON, Mass. – The Roger Williams University men's basketball team defeated Curry on Saturday afternoon, 84-65, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play.
 
The Hawks were led by Mac Annus (Belmont, Mass.) who scored 22 points on the day, while also pulling down seven rebounds and dishing out six assists. John Ah Kao (Dumont, N.J.) had 17 points coming off the bench in an 8-9 shooting performance, while Will MacDonanld (York, Maine) also had 16 points with seven rebounds, shooting 50 percent from the floor.
 
Curry's Lowelle Torres tallied a game-high 25 points with eight rebounds, three assists and a steal.
 
In the first half, Curry got on the board first with Lowell Torres knocking down a jumper, before a few possessions later Nate Lopes (Scituate, Mass.) finished on a lay in attempt to level the score. Curry held a 13-8 lead before the Hawks' offense erupted for 10 straight points to take a 18-13 lead with just over 10 minutes remaining. Torres scored to cut the lead back down to three, but Roger Williams again went on another run, scoring another seven straight points.
 
The Hawks led by as many as 17 points in the first half, but went into the break leading 40-24.
 
Curry trailed by 12 just over a minute into the second half, before a three-point jumper by Max Manjos (Monroe, Conn.) was followed with two consecutive made shots, a layup by Annus, and another three-pointer from Lopes to bring the lead up to 20. The Hawks led by as many as 28 points in the second half, before Colonels cut the lead to as few as 16 points with around 2:30 remaining in the second half, but the Hawks closed out the matchup with the win.
 
Roger Williams (11-6, 8-2 CCC) will host Suffolk on Tuesday, Jan. 24 at 7:30 pm in CCC action.  They will then face off against the Nor'easters of the University of New England on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 3 pm.
