Women’s Basketball: Araneo’s 10-Point First Quarter Leads Hawks Past Leopards

BRISTOL, R.I.-- The Roger Williams women's basketball team took down Wentworth, 84-50, remaining unbeaten in conference play. 

The Hawks had five players score in double-digits, with Sophie Araneo (Branford, Conn.) scoring 17 points, while Kendi Barnard (Bedford, N.H.), Nikki Rosa (Nahant, Mass.), and Caroline Elie (Rockland, Mass.), and Peri MacDonald (Melrose, Mass.) each scored 10 points apiece. Katie Galligan (Pembroke, Mass.) led in assists and blocks, with six and two respectively. 

On the Leopards side, Maddy Foster led the team with 17 points and six rebounds. Abriana Busbey was another top scorer, having 13 points, four rebounds and four steals.  

Just 15 seconds into the contest, Araneo put the Hawks on the scoreboard knocking down a jumper. With the Hawks up, 6-5, Roger Williams scored seven straight points to take an eight-point lead, before Busbey knocked down a three-pointer to cut the lead to five. With the Hawks holding a 16-11 advantage with 2:58 remaining in the opening quarter, Roger Williams again scored six straight to take a 24-11 lead. The Leopards score cut the lead down to nine before a three by Rosa and jumper by Galligan solidified the Hawks lead, 29-15, at the end of the opening frame.  Araneo scored 10 of her 17 points in the first quarter. 

Continuing to pull ahead, the Hawks scored from seven layups in the second quarter. Galligan had the lone three-pointer in the frame. Cara Murphy (Springfield, Mass.) had a steal with just over two minutes left in the first half, assisting on a layup by Lizzy Stevenson (Bedford, N.H.). Scoring in the period was rounded out with a jumper by Araneo.  

At the beginning of the second half, Barnard went in for a steal, then rushed down the court finishing a layup. Barnard gained a defensive rebound and two assists in the period. Reese Cordero (Whitman, Mass.) made a layup at the buzzer, putting the score at 70-43 for the quarter.  

Giana Pye (Wallingford, Conn.) sank back-to-back shots in the fourth quarter, first with a jumper, then a layup. Murphy sank a three-pointer with less than a minute left in the game to round out scoring for the Hawks.  

Roger Williams (14-3, 8-0 CCC) will face Curry on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 1pm. They will then host Suffolk on Tuesday, Jan. 24.
