Men’s Basketball: Hawks Fall to Rams in Conference Play

BRISTOL, R.I.-- The Roger Williams men's basketball team was downed by Suffolk on Tuesday night, 78-63, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play.

Each of the Hawks top players scored in double figures, Mac Annus (Belmont, Mass.) logging 18 points, John Ah Kao (Dumont, N.J.) earned 11 points, and Nate Lopes (Scituate, Mass.) put up 10 points, 10 rebounds, and four assists as he recorded his third double-double of the season. Philip Sughrue (Winchester, Mass.) led the defensive effort with three steals and a block.

On Suffolk's side the top scorer was Keenan Robertson with 19 points. The top six scorers for the Rams recorded points in double digits.

In the first half the Rams put up nine points before the Hawks were able to score. Lopes started scoring for Roger Williams with a driving layup, cutting the difference to seven. This was quickly followed by a jump shot by Sughrue and a layup by Harrison Latimer (Topsfield, Mass.). Suffolk scored again before Ty Higgins (New Marlborough, Mass.) sank a three-pointer, bringing the score to 11-9. The Hawks scored off five three-point shots in the first half. Unable to overcome Suffolk's early lead, Roger Williams trailed at halftime, 46-31.

The Hawks came into the second half with Annus throwing in a layup and Sughrue sinking a three-pointer moments later. A total of 11 layups were scored by Roger Williams in the second frame, but Suffolk maintained their advantage throughout the second half, on their way to a win.

Suffolk ended the game with 48 points in the paint, while the Hawks led in fastbreak points 11-5.

Roger Williams (11-8, 8-3 CCC) will host the University of New England on Saturday, January 24 at 3 pm. They will then be on the road to face Western New England on Wednesday, February 1, in a rematch of their overtime thriller on Jan. 10.
