BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams women's basketball team gained yet another Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) victory Saturday afternoon in the Campus Rec Center, winning against University of New England, 69-42.
Katie Galligan (Pembroke, Mass.) and Sophia Coppola (Madison, Conn.) each scored 14 points. Galligan also had three steals and one block on the defensive side. Caroline Elie (Rockland, Mass.) and Kendi Barnard (Bedford, N.H.) scored 12 points each and both had seven rebounds.
UNE's top scorer, Faye Veilleux, stood out with 17 total points. Keagan Dunbar was the Nor'Easter's next top-scorer, having six points and three rebounds, including her thousandth career point.
Mere moments into the start of the game Elie started scoring for the Hawks, putting in a layup. An additional layup made by Barnard helped Roger Williams to stay ahead in the opening minutes of the first quarter. UNE was able to pull ahead with three minutes remaining in the quarter, taking the score to 13-10 in favor of the Nor'Easters going into the second quarter.
Two layups made by Elie in the beginning of the second frame pulled the Hawks into the lead. Coppola sank a three-pointer, furthering the lead for Roger Williams. The half ended with the Hawks up, 23-20.
An impressive 32 points were scored for the Hawks in the third quarter, with 10 layups being put in during the period. Roger Williams went into the fourth quarter leading, 55-28.
The Hawks gained 15 points from turnovers. They led the Nor'Easters in free throw percentage 72.7-65.
Roger Williams (16-3, 12-0 CCC) takes on Western New England on Wednesday, February 1 at 5:30. The Hawks will then host Gordon on Saturday, February 4.
