Field Hockey: Hawks Fall to UNE in Double Overtime

BIDDEFORD, Maine — In a thrilling field hockey match at Blue Bolt Field, the University of New England (UNE) narrowly defeated Roger Williams, 3-2, in a double overtime Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match.

The Nor'easters improved their record to 7-8 (3-0 CCC), while the Hawks moved to 11-3 (3-1 CCC).

UNE had a total of 11 shots, 8 of which were on goal. RWU managed 18 shots, with 10 of them on target. UNE's Dawn DeWeese-Moss making 8 saves and Jill Haudenshield (Sykesville, Md.) making 4 saves in net. UNE was awarded 5 penalty corners, while RWU had 10 throughout the match, edging the Nor'easters in the category.

The first two quarters of the match were goalless, as both teams were powered by strong defensive performances. However, the third quarter saw an explosion of scoring action, starting with a goal by UNE's Morgan Mast at the 3:05 into the second half. Gianna Korisianos provided the assist, marking Mast's second goal of the season.

Roger Williams answered back in the fourth quarter, when Hannah Timbrouck (Kingston, N.Y.) found the back of the net, assisted by Chelsea King (Schenectady, N.Y.).

UNE regained the lead with 4:25 remaining in regulation when Madi Robito was on the receiving end of a pass from Morgan Mast. As the match entered its final minutes, the Hawks had a chance to level the score when they were awarded a penalty stroke. Elizabeth Duquette (Pittsford, N.Y.) made no mistake and successfully converted the stroke at the with 1:10 remaining in the fourth quarter.

With the score tied at 2-2 at the end of regulation, the match proceeded into overtime. It was the UNE Nor'easters who ultimately prevailed, as Micaela Jacobs scored the decisive goal in the second overtime period, with 27 seconds remaining, marking her first goal of the season.

The victory maintained UNE's undefeated record in CCC play, while Roger Williams suffered its first conference loss of the season, and ending their record setting winning streak at seven games.
 
Roger Williams (11-3, 3-1 CCC) will travel to face Connecticut College on Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 7:00 pm.  The Hawks will then face MIT the following Wednesday, Oct. 25 facing MIT, before rounding out the regular season on Friday, Oct. 27 at 4:00 pm on Senior Day.
